This afternoon I sanded it down and gave it a couple of coats of varnish:
Having removed most of the felt and holders for the original cutlery, I've now added a layer of slanted racks (covered in decent cloth) in each of the lower drawer and the upper section:
The only task remaining is to make two more lift-out sections, one for each part of the box, so that I have four sections in total.
And after that I just need to fill it!
