Storing Bronze age Spear Head ?

Post by Spooky » Sat Jul 14, 2018 8:01 am

My partner found a bronze age spear head albeit with tip missing . It has been given to the FLO and passed back with the advice to wrap in acid free tissue paper in a sealed plastic box with silica gel to draw out any moisture!
Heres a link to the spear head on PAS https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts ... /id/908979
As it has already deteriorated somewhat and possibly showing signs of bronze disease, do you think that a coat of renaissance wax will be beneficial.? :-/

My understanding is that if it has active bronze disease and you coat it in some form of wax it will still be eaten away eventually. Ideally the bronze disease needs treating with something like sodium sesquicarbonate and then it needs sealing to prevent future outbreaks.

What Phil said. u;@ The last thing you want to do is seal in any remaining moisture, hence the advice from the FLO.
Essential equipment:
Some sort of electrical gubbins(I'm told it's a Deus). In various colours

I could easily be wrong. But it looks more like corrosion than bronze disease. No doubt you could get some professional advice from a museum if you asked.
