Finally a Hammy with the Q40

Post by cantona1 » Fri Jan 12, 2018 5:43 pm

Sometimes it seems that further north you are all tripping over hammered coins on the way to your permissions, :D it seems a bit harder down here but I have finally found my first English hammered, I think it's a Lizzie 1 shilling from 1576 and she's a beauty ::g, about 26mm in diameter, interestingly at some stage in her life she was folded exactly in half along one of the cross lines (you can still see the fold line) and then straightened again, I'd love to say she was 10 inches deep and lost in the mud but in reality she was an inch down and absolutely screaming at me, couldn't miss the signal :D I just couldn't believe the size of her, way bigger than I ever expected. Can someone confirm what she is please?

I also found what I think is a cane topper, Livery button with what looks like a Flamingo on it? Would have been beautiful in its time because it looks like it was Silver plated originally, can somebody identify the button please? Charles 11 farthing and a couple of Georgians in bad nick.
Absolutely chuffed with the Hammy though :D
One more pic to follow.

You are definitely barking up the wrong tree if you think that up here we are finding lots of hammies, I am in south cheshire and that is most certainly NOT the case.

Batman, from a distance we assume that some fields up in the North are paved with hammies, obviously not the case everywhere then :D I assumed that with the much larger population it would be much more common to find them, you have my sympathies :D it's bloody hard work isn't it?I

Hmmm is it a stork? The Chichester one is the nearest but not a direct match. You might find this a useful resource. It’s been shared on here before, but apologies I can’t remember who by. There are a couple of experts on these on the site so you may have to wait till they log on.

https://sites.google.com/site/liverybut ... and-stocks

The coin could have been bent for a number of reasons. Maybe it was accidental? Maybe found by a previous detectorist who’d straightened it, then re-buried it to get his/ her detecting karma back a la ‘The Detectorists’ ;)

The problems with this hobby are often our finds create more questions than they answer 8-}

Looks like the hammie is a sixpence then, where are you Allectus? Any idea on the mint etc?

One in 7 years detecting for me mate, I have found 3 lots of gold and not modern gold either, so my statistics say I am 3 times more likely to find gold than hammered!!! It’s a strange hobby. :)

Batman, it's crazy isn't it? I found a Gold ring in the first month, since then I've found more silver partifacts than silver hammies, a piece of a buckle, cane toppers, watch cover etc, Silver French 1/12 ECU but until today no English hammies, hopefully they will come along more frequently now that I've broken my duck ::g
