Notch discrimination advice

Post by Optimistic Jack » Sun May 06, 2018 7:34 pm

I am a newbie and started metal detecting on a local beach with permission.
The beach is extremely quiet particularly so early in the season.
I am looking primarily for coins and jewellry on custom mode.
I have set discrimination at 75 and sensitivity around 3 bars.
I am having very few bleeps but realise finding something this time of the year is likely to be difficult.

Am I on the right track?

Many thanks,

Gwyn

I don't 'do' the beach Gwyn, but the discrimination sounds high and the sensitivity low. My main setting is zero disc with discrimination notched up to 40 and the sensitivity reduced by two bars - one bar higher on good ground. You may want to wait for a 400 beach searcher.

I don't do beaches either but 75 sounds way too high. Drop it down to 30-40 and see how you get on.

Yep not to far out, sometimes I notch out upto to 60 . Have a look at Geoffbeepingmad on the tube as he runs a 400i on the beach.

yep I second that , I have a 400i and on Geoffs recommendations I discrim everything out up to and including 50, he has sensitivity on max including on wet sand , I can't do that on the beach I detect, I start with 2 bars knocked off and if the machine keeps falsing notch more and continue until it settles down, dry sand is no problem as you probably know. Well, every day's schoolday, as they say. The idea of notching out so much gives me a bad case of the hives but it's clearly required on beaches.

Thanks for the enlightenment ::g

2 bars off max sensitivity
Dry sand only

Thanks to all for your advice and sorry for the delay in responding. Our caravan site has limited internet access and the demand this bank holiday weekend has ground the system to a halt.
Will try my luck again later on the beach taking on board advice given.

Early days but having no success. Very little finds just the odd bit of rubbish.

I am still using the custom mode around 50 discrimination.

If I use the jewelry mode will that still identify coins?

Kind regards,

Gwyn

yes it will, jewelry mode won't discriminate coins. Do some bench tests at home with different coins so you get an idea of what signals and numbers they give.

Thank you STJimmy. Good advice thank you.

Maybe I have been too keen to get out there without doing the basics first such as a bench test.

Kind regards,

Gwyn
