Sensitivity

Post by jonahjones » Fri May 25, 2018 9:28 pm

Hi guys,
Just been out for the first time with my 400i, a couple of hours after work.
I’m just using default settings so far, but with 5 bars on the sensitivity scale I seemed to get a lot of what I expect would be called ‘falsing’
Tried pinpointing, strong signal, dug down, used pinpointer no signal, scanned spoil with MD signal no more?
I did find a nice example of 10mm copper pipe about 12” long, possibly part of a Roman hypocaust!

Any suggestions, gratefully received.
Jonah.

What 'Koala' said but additionally, details of (all) the settings used would go a long way to obtaining a considered opinion from one of our knowledgeable Garrett 400i user. ::g Regards ss47
Edit:- Having looked-up the 400i spec,I see it's an automated ground balanced machine. I expect therefore, it will be a matter of high positive mineral content in the area you are carrying out the tests. Hope you get solution.::g Regards ss47

I would have thought that, unless the ground conditions of the field are really bad, you could use 6/7 bars with little problem. Was the grass long? Were you 'bumping' the ground? Near a metal/electric fence? Overhead cables? You will get a false signal if you are brushing undergrowth or grass for example as the coil is sensitive, but easily checked by crisscrossing the spot.
You say that you checked the spoil with the MD - did you also recheck the hole with it? If not, perhaps the target was deeper and out of reach of the pinpointer.

In usual circumstances you can happily run the 400i on one or two bars off of full, sometimes full.

Bad soil, deep iron, electrical interference....all kinds of things can cause a detector to ping and false.

You need to get it on different places so you can understand if it's just the location and not the machine, it's usually a pretty stable unit on higher sensitivities.

Small targets can be troublesome to find. If it only happens occasionally it's probably a 22 cartridge or similar. Try a few more hours with it. Takes practice. Occasionally surface finds get flicked away when you flick the sod over. Or objects in the bottom of the hole get flipped vertical and are no longer detectable by the coil.

Thanks for the replies all!
I’m out again tomorrow I need to reign in my enthusiasm, slow down and stop acting like a kid with the keys to the sweet shop.
I’ll let you know how I get on!
Cheers, Jonah.
