Not detecting gold....

Post by Emily » Mon Jul 23, 2018 4:44 pm

We have a problem!! I am on holiday in South Devon. I’ve been detecting for the last few days, but have just realised today, that I am not picking up ANY signals for gold. I went over my rings, my aunts 24K bracelets. NOTHING!!

What is going on??!!
Can anyone help me??
PLEASE!!

Are you discriminating out by mistake ?
Don`t know what Gold comes in at.
Try in "All Metal " no discrimination at all.
Check audio connection working.
Batteries strength ?

I tried all different settings and still no sound or numbers on the detector. My battery is on its last legs, but the detector still turns on. The audio connection is fine. I have a Garrett 400i.

You could try a factory reset.
In the event you encounter problems with your ACE 400i detector please read through this Owner’s Manual carefully to ensure the detector is not inoperable due to manual adjustments. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to return to the recommended factory settings.

You should also make certain you have:

1. Checked your batteries and connectors. Weak batteries
are the most common cause of detector “failure.”

Put some new batteries in if yours are on their last legs. May just have enough power to turn on and no more. If not batteries, replacements can be used elsewhere. 400i normally find max battery power lasts around 20hrs before you lose the 1st block on the Guage, never been lower than 50% before replacing, normally replace at 75% inland.
Looking at your post from Saturday, the coil was in saltwater, possibility water has got in, salt water being the worst.
Hopefully just the batteries need replacing.

"Batteries on their last legs" is a likely cluprit, as said above. The 400i manual says to replace them when you reach the second bar but I think that's unnecessary. It you're on one bar, though...

As above new decent batteries, but hoping no water got near the control box, also take the coil cover off and clear any salt water that might be trapped in there.

hello, it is also worth noting on batteries, do not buy cheap, a detector will work best on full power but once you find a problem or the detector not working as it should fit new ones, if it states they last 20 hours change at 15, where detectors use 4/8 AA there might be a duff one, buy a battery checker, i sometimes use duracell but find energizers lithium fit better in the box and last better without draining power. good luck

Let's start at the beginning

Does it register gold if you press the pinpoint button ?

Hi Emily,
it will be the batteries for sure. Change them for some good quality batteries, preferably not rechargeable ones. Use Duracell or the likes.

Hello everyone!!

I apologise for the delayed response. I am now back from holiday, and I can happily say that my detector is working fine again!! It was indeed the batteries. I probably should’ve replaced them before I posted, but it didn’t occur to me that they would have such an effect. At least I know now. :)

Thank you all so much for your help. I’ll be posting a few images up of my finds throughout the week soon. :)

I'm pleased to hear that this was an easy fix for you and not a huge problem. As others have suggested, it's always good practice to swap the batteries for fresh ones once the machine hits two bars on the power scale.
