Retrofitting a rheostat to Garrett 400i for volume

Post by jezperrott » Tue Aug 28, 2018 2:32 pm

Has anyone managed to fit a volume control for the built-in speaker for the Garrett 400i? I know it's important to hear all the farts and whistles as well as the solid beeps, but it's just a bit too loud for some situations. I've thought of simply sticking something over the speaker, but a volume control would be nicer.

If anyone has managed to do this, could you share values and method etc?

Thanks! ::g

Did you consider the z-lynk Jez (if you haven't already)? Fits snugly to the 400i and once you have dispensed with the headphone lead, you'll never go back. Works a treat with inline volume too.

Just wondering why you would want in invalidate your warranty and effect the resale value when you can use headphones which would probably help you find the quiet targets better. Especially as most rallies insist you have to wear headphones if you were to attend any in the future.

there is a video on YouTube of a chap successfully fitting a volume knob to an ace 250, I don't know if the board is similar to the 400i but could be worth a look . " garrett ace 250 volume modification "

If you attend rallies with volume and the machine chirping away it may not be permitted, most rallies insist on headphones to prevent a cacophony of chirping, beeping and farting

Do you actually want to vary the volume, or just reduce it to a more manageable level?
If a fixed reduction is OK, then just fit a resistor in series with the speaker. Speakers are usually 8 Ohms ( it will be marked on the back of it ) and fitting something like 20 to 30 Ohms in series will give a suitable reduction in noise. Plus a slight increase in battery life, too.

Thanks for the solutions, guys, both very helpful. It's the technical stuff I don't know about, not the reasons why I should or should do it. ::g ;)

Hi, as a 400i owner I have thought about a volume Controll myself but am worried about warranties etc. I wonder if you could remove the headphones themselves and attach a speaker to the lead, you would have the volume Controll still and it wouldn't be a permanent fixture. If anyone with a technical head on their shoulders knows if this is possible let me know. Good luck. Andy.

Very unlikely - when you plug in headphones, a resistor is switched into the circuit to limit the volume of the headphones. Typical resistor values would be 200 to 500 Ohms, which will drop down the power from 300 milliwatts (speaker) to 30 milliwatts (earpieces) roughly. If you connect a loudspeaker on the headphone output, it will be very quiet.
