Nel Tornado 13” coil recommendations

Post by Emily » Wed Aug 29, 2018 1:11 pm

I have a chance to purchase a new coil for my detector. I have been pondering this for a while, but have only recently started to look into it. The coil I’m looking at is a Nel Tornado 13”, and would love any opinions on it.

I can currently get it for £100, and am not sure if that’s good value, but I would welcome anyone’s thoughts on how the coil performs.

Thank you :)

Hi, the NEL Tornado is a well tried and tested coil that receives great user feedback, from many different machine users. I myself have one for my XP GMP, and it has been great.
I am sure if you youtube your detector including Tornado in the search, you will find some video of people using it.

A seriously good coil, in that size range ::g

Well in that case I would say good value, I cannot find a new one below £120

One drawback with a bigger coil is the weight Emily, you may find it more tiring while swinging it.

Hi Emily, I would say the unused NEL Tornado coil, with full warranty, for £100 is a good buy.

I used a NEL Tornado coil on my Garret Ace 250, I purchased it for the extra ground coverage it provided, but it did also give extra depth (not massive but noticable), and I liked it.

I know others that have used it on the Garrett machines and it is a popular choice.

Bob79 said about the extra weight, I did not find this an issue. BUT the NEL Tornado did change the balance of the machine so it did not feel so easy to easy for a long session.
As I do not know you I will say that as a general rule ladies are more slightly built than men so this might be more noticable. I do know one small lady of a "certain age" that uses a Garret 250 with a NEL Tornado coil with a harness (I emphasise that this is a one off to my knowledge), so there are ways around it if you found the larger coil harder swinging and I would certainly not let this put you off.

As with all coils the NEL Tornado coil has its advantages, eg increased ground coverage and extra depth, but there are situations where the standard coil would be better, eg if there was a lot of iron / trash in the area where a smaller coil would give better seperation.

Hopefully I have given both sides of the arguement so you can make your own mind up.
But IMHO for £100 it is a good buy and I suggest that you go for it.

hello, as your ace is a 10 Khz detector you might find the need to re adjust settings, and yes it will swing a tad heavier, but saying that go for it, some good vids including mud max on the nel + 400 ace

its not all about depth + nel coil, my euro ace can find items at good depth and thats 8 Khz but does struggle on tiny items, with the nel has better iron seperation your 10 Khz should do well,

Hi Emily, I have this coil on my X Terra 705 the 7.5khz version, it is in my opinion a brilliant coil. I would say I am getting between about 25/30% more depth than my old stock coil and it’s fantastic on small targets even though it’s the low end frequency version. For my detector I think they cost about £180ish so sounds like you may have a bargain. IMHO definitely worth the money. Hope this helps and good luck. ::g

Hi all!! Thank you so much for your recommendations. Unfortunately the person who was selling it has sold it to someone else. :( no new coil for me.

If anyone knows of someone looking to sell, please let me know. :)

I have just put a Neil on my Garrett Ace 250 still trying to get to grips with it to be honest , my arm was like Popeye the first time i used it as there is a difference in weight to the Garrett std coil , i found pin pointing a bit harder so ended up with a bigger holes , i found it easier to use if the ground was soft not the hard stuff we have now due to hole size. i take both coils to digs now and pick depending on ground condition. but yes better coverage and a bit deeper as stated.

to be honest i think its me rather than the coil
