Emergency!

Post by Emily » Thu Sep 13, 2018 10:09 am

Good morning!!

I am on holiday in Scotland, and have just this moment got permission to detect on a battlefield from 1306. Robert The Bruce.

Apparently the field has been detected quite a lot over the years, but I don’t want to turn up such an opportunity because of that.

I have a Garret 400i. Which settings should I use to try and get the most out of the field??

HELP ME!!

all metal, minimal discrimination and dig anything that doesnt sound like iron
Really is quite simple

I don’t want to sound negative, but if it’s a known battlefield, then it may we’ll be protected. My advice would be check thoroughly before you get in it.
If it’s good to go, as blackadder43 has said, all metal, as much sensitivity as the ground will allow, low and slow and listen for the sweet tones in amongst the obligatory iron.
Good luck.

Hello. :) the field is on community land, and so as long as I asked the surrounding farms, I’d be fine. :) it was however as silent as a grave and NOTHING came up!! It was extremely hard going and marshy, so I’m pleased I made it back!! Haha.

I spoke to historic Scotland, and they claim that it ISN’T on their list of protected sites. They said that It’s actually privately owned land, and suggested speaking to the farm owners surrounding it. I did so, and was informed that it’s community land, and so as long as I leave it as I found it, I can detect freely on the site. :)

However, having spend hours out there, nothing came up and it has definitely been picked clean by detectorists over the years.

That’s not the news we wanted to here,,,, we were expecting the usual umpteen gold rings, coins and sword adornments... :D
Logically thinking, battle sites would note have great value finds, they didn’t take nice items into battle. Historic yes, valuable no. You’d need to find out where the camps were.... ::g

And if you do go back don’t be shy of digging iron. What were swords and axes made of ?
That marshy ground could have preserved a few bits.
But watch out, if you fall in, it might preserve you :-O

Well done for trying the first time ::g
