Charging

Post by Buriedbytime&dust » Wed Jul 11, 2018 5:46 pm

Equinox 800 arrived today ::g

Inside the box is a warning not to use mid-capacity USB chargers. Erring on the safe side I've hooked it up to the laptop, but my question is whether I can use the charger that came with my CTX?

It's designed for a LI-Ion battery, so logically it should be fine, and charge a lot quicker than the 18hrs it states for a laptop USB, but I don't want any unnecessary issues that aren't covered by the warranty.

I would be seeking advice from the warranty issue ... its where the buck stops, any other advice doesnt carry the same weight.

Sound advice. Cheers ::g

I did try phoning the dealer, but at 4:59pm, and they close at 5pm, so I didn't expect an answer to my call, and didn't get one.

As it turns out, the laptop port gave a full charge in about 4hrs, rather than the 18hrs suggested (presumably that'll be from absolutely flat though) so all was good anyway.

Initial tests on the testbed targets show great promise, and that's before I've even read the manual, so things are looking good! :D

That's sound advice from 'oldartefact' and the only way ahead without risking voiding your warranty.

The charge time from flat is 4hrs, the reference to 18hrs is the estimated run time after its charged.

The charging advice leaflet in the box states a full charge time of "less than 4hrs" for 2A USB chargers and Minelab chargers and "approximately 18 hours" for a laptop USB 2.0 port.

Hey ho, I'll stick with the laptop port for now, until I get confirmation that one of my other detector chargers can be safely used with the Equinox ::g

When this was discussed 3 months ago most of us just bought reputable four port 5V chargers. These deliver 1.2amps per port. I've had no issues so far and a machine with three or four hours use charges in an hour or two at most. Another advantage is that you can connect up all sorts of other bits like mobile phones and tablets to it.

Unless the advice has been changed this is all the Equinox manual says on the subject:

The charge time from completely flat to 100% is approximately 4
hours when a high capacity (>1.7A @ 5V) charger is used. Car and
wall charging accessories are available for separate purchase.

Any standard USB port compatible with USB battery charging 1.2
(BC1.2) can be used to charge your battery, however charge times
may be longer if using lower-power options.

PS And also (just in case you were thinking of using it for electrofishing :D ):

The detector must not be used underwater whilst
charging or when connected to a power bank.

Not practical, too many different systems around the world. They'd need to pack the box differently for each country. ::g

Or supply a box full of adaptors, as they do with the CTX, but I suppose they wanted to keep costs down for a mid-range machine.

It would have been nice to have one supplied, but it's not a major issue.

That looks very useful. I don't have my destructions to hand - does it definitely comply with the recommendations?
