Stuttering Audio on the Nox

Post by Buriedbytime&dust » Sun Dec 30, 2018 12:11 pm

Anyone else experienced this?

What's happening is that the audio becomes intermittently broken, like a mobile phone reception in very poor signal area. It occurs whilst searching and if auto Noise Cancel is operated at that time, the tune produced by that will become broken also.

It tends to happen more often later in the day for some odd reason, and whilst it's not a major problem it is becoming a bit of an annoyance.

Things I've ruled out:

EMI: It's happening in areas where EMI is not an issue at all.

GB & Noise Cancel: Tried leaving both at 0, performing both on auto, and both on manual. None make any difference.

Signal loss to the WM08: It does the same through the inbuilt speaker.

Coil issues: It's the same with the stock 11 and the EQX15.

Update: It did it before and after the update.

Factory Reset: Tried this numerous times and the problem persists.

If it did it all the time it would be time to contact the dealer, but intermittent issues are a real problem under warranty :-L

Have you tried it with your mobile phone switched off?

I haven't, but I'll try switching it off next time it plays up ::g

Would mobile phone EMI interfere with the detector for just a short while? I've never had any issues with my mobile (£10 worth of PAYG simplicity - no such thing as Airplane Mode!) messing with detectors before.

Sounds like the phone is the likely cause then. Cheers ::g

I don't use the WM08 unit because I have this problem when using a jackplug adapter. I have also heard of other people having a similar issue. No problems with bluetooth though.

The Minelab Bluetooth 'phones are still packaged up, in the box the Equinox arrived in. I like my cheapo XP blue backphones [:)

I did wonder whether the module might be at fault, so one time when it happened I turned wireless off, enabling the inbuilt loudpeaker, which gave exactly the same broken tones, so I don't think the problem lies there.

If your settings are relatively standard that sounds like a back to the manufacturer job to me.

When it played up a couple of weeks back I did a full factory reset in the field, so everything obviously reverted to standard settings, and it didn't stop the stuttering.

I'll try switching the phone off next time it occurs and hopefully that'll sort it. Otherwise I'll have the task of catching the intermittent issue on video to send to the dealer.

It's not the end of the world, but it is tainting my enjoyment of what is otherwise an excellent machine.

I have not had this chattering problem with my 800 and I keep my phone on in my pocket. Then today I was detecting on a beach when a txt arrived, I looked at it and replied, put the phone away and bingo chattering Nox. Its not done it before that im aware, did a ground balance, no difference. Pulled out the phone with this thread in mind and hit airplane mode.
Instant peace, no chattering. I will wait and see if its repeatable, but it looks like that was at least my problem.

My 800 started giving a harsh irony tone on any target but only when I had used it for a few hours! to start out with it was fine only later in the day did it do it, couldnt work it out but took coil cover off an cleaned it out only a bit of soil in it and did a factory reset an has been ok since! I guess it must have got tired later in the day.

Sorry no, forgot to use reply with quote. Main post only. Different phones work in different ways. Some interference is inevitable when in actual use and depends on how the phone polls for a signal when not. My old unsmart 'brick' is fine with it. ::g
