Equinox 800, how to make it lighter ?

Post by PinkFloyd » Tue Nov 05, 2019 7:58 am

800 with standard coil, what stem options are best for reducing the weight ?
Or any other ways ?

It’s going to be used by myself and my young-un .

Cheers ::g

Hi.PinkFloyd
Go for a telescopic carbon stem. Its lighter and makes it more useable for a young person.

Tie a load of helium balloons to it, but try not to let go of it. :D

The main way is to use a carbon shaft which will make it about 100 grams lighter. You could even remove the rear stand. Other than that you could use a bungee which would enable you to effortlessly swing the already lightweight machine with just one finger. Thats pretty much it. ::g

As above, the lighter shaft, but ultimately a detector weighs what it weighs. Balance is often overlooked and you can make it feel lighter by taking the time to get the shaft length right. If I use the shaft at the length which is comfortable for the 6" coil it makes my arm ache with the 15". I also mount my pinpointer behind the arm cuff, which gives better balance.

After using a Explorer SE Pro for 10 years using the nox 800 feels like you are swinging just a stick like my Detector pro Wader. Hope to get out down the beach next week.

Yeah I agree with majority of the comments, carbon fibre stem. Works wonders for making it lighter.

Can’t imagine reducing the weight by 100grams is going to make any practical difference over the course of a day?

With the kids, I suspect you will be better just restricting them to short turns until they gain strength as they get older.

For yourself, I harness will reduce fatigue far better than shaving off a mere 100grams...

It's not at all heavy as it is so I don't see the point in trying to make it even lighter particularly when a couple of hours on plough means the mud on the coil will counteract anything you are trying to do :D

The best weight saving is to put the 6 inch coil on.

the only problem I found was water collecting in the coil cover. worse when detecting grass etc. drilling holes to sort this out means the holes get bunged up with mud so back to square one

Converting to a s-shaft configuration would make the balance and use better , removing the control/screen section and mounting onto another shaft or putting a bend onto another equinox replacement shaft

Oh, I do like to sprint before learning to walk :))

Buying a carbon stem will not make any noticeable difference to the weight there like a 100 grams lighter and people were only buying them when they had wobbly shafts if you have a new nox the cam locks are way better , your better keeping the stock stem and buying a bungee harness and keeping your money in your pocket ::g

I belive you can use the Shaft without the middle section. Obviously no good for you but might help your son.

Exactly what I was about to suggest! I balance all sorts of rackets for the professional squash/tennis players and 95% demand a "head light" racket, where most of the weight is located nearest to the handle end/moving arm, allowing easier volley action. This makes it much easier to swing sideways and back as there is less momentum to overcome at the end of each sweep.
So, the actual weight is not the issue, its the balance that may make it feel uncomfortable. More weight can add more arm comfort, if the balance is good. Plus moves through stubble easier.

Completely agree. Even after fitting a carbon fibre stem to my Equinox 800, I deliberately added seven ounces of weight (in the very top tube above the arm cup) to counterbalance the head-heaviness, and it completely transformed the ergonomics. Paradoxically, the detector feels lighter rather than heavier in use, simply because the balance is so much kinder.

Adding weight at the top, sounds a great idea and easy to do ::g

I’ve read , box mounted on a xterra shaft is possible ,
There is another shaft...which I’ve now forgotten the name of ...which is even more of a simple switch

Yes indeedy, just pop off the plastic end-cap, then rummage around in your lead scrap box for some large-calibre musket balls or a chunky cylindrical weight.

To prevent the lead moving about, wrap in a cloth rag and stuff tightly. Another tip is to wrap tape around the grip as the bigger the grip, the more contact/friction. ::g Liam

Way ahead of you, baby. I treated it like loading a musket, wadding and all. (Hey, our detectors could make cool Avengers-style secret weapons!)

All good and interesting suggestions, but a typical 2 year old will get bored of detecting after 5 minutes anyway (unless you get immediate results!), so weight isn't really going to be an issue!
