Equinox accessories and alternative headphones

Post by tcawood » Sun Feb 04, 2018 5:49 pm

I'm looking at getting the 600 rather than the 800 as the extra's seem to be either Gold related, and I'll never go nugget hunting, or they are wireless headphone related.

The multifrequency is the same and there's just a couple of menu settings that seem to be restricted on the 600.

So with that in mind, I was wondering if any of the accessories that they list here https://www.minelab.com/usa/accessories ... nox-series have been give prices yet?

And secondly, headphones with Aptx Low Latency dont seem very common, anyone aware of any 'good' ones?

Is it? I'm not sure whether the multi-frequency option on the 800 encompasses the 20 & 40kHz, or whether it is actually just the same 5/10/15 as the 600 Image

Anyone know for sure?

Yep, this is from the Equinox manual, underneath the multi-frequency illustration on page 29.

* 20 kHz and 40 kHz are not available as single operating frequencies in EQUINOX 600. The Multi-IQ frequency range shown applies to both EQUINOX 600 and 800. This diagram is
representative only. Actual sensitivity levels will depend upon target types and sizes, ground conditions and detector settings.

So in multi you get all the frequencies, but 20 and 40 cannot be selected in the single frequency settings, which is fine as I don't intend to nugget hunt.

What do you think of the supplied headphones? Some claim that they are a considerable improvement on the normal Minelab offering. :-/

I am currently testing some Low Latency Apt-x bluetooth headphones from Amazon. 20hr battery life. So far so good. They paired very easily and I have not noticed any drop off on any tones. They are quite light and seem comfortable enough. I have worn for 4 hours non-stop and felt fine. They also come with a 3.5mm cable for when the battery runs out so you can just use them as wired. Price paid £20. 98; 98; 98;

Hi Mate,

They are Taotronics -

They get some good (and genuine) reviews and come with a 30 month warranty.

Are you sure those are low latency? (didn't see it in ad). Some have said that the Miccus SR-71 are clones of the headphones included with the Equinox 800. I have the 600 and use the Avantree Audition Pro ("Pro" is the low latency version of the Audition).

The Miccus definitely looks like the Equinox headphones, the shape of the headset is a little unusual and they are exactly the same... even the hardshell case looks the same!

Thanks Dubious

Hi Dubious, They are APT-X which is low latency audio. Tested in the field at the weekend and they were pretty decent. Really good audio quality and no lag. Battery life wasn't tested as I only went out for 7 hours and battery life is 20+. I think for the money they are a good option. I did consider the Avantree Audition Pro but too rich for me ;))

Hi Diggerty.

I think the confusion is because there is more than one aptx codec, not all aptx headphones are therefore low latency.

You have to specifically get aptx low latency or aptx ll in the headphones to get the best lag performance.

There's even some on Amazon that are labelled APTX (not low latency).

Not to say that yours aren't working fine for you, afterall the lag difference will be milliseconds.

Yep, sorry you are completely correct. You too Dubious. Found this online that shows the difference

As you say, we are talking milliseconds difference. Not sure if it greatly affects the accuracy when metal detecting. I am going to test with wire set to see.

Yeah, not sure it makes a practical difference. Would be interested in hearing your conclusions.

After researching a number of Low Latency sets I did indeed go for the Miccus Low Latency headphones, been out with them over the weekend and very happy with them... no discernible lag at all, easy to pair and use and seem a robust piece of kit.

I have been testing the Non-Low latency Aptx headset I bought for a couple of weeks. Comparing them with the wired headset I have. I must say, I could not tell the difference. If anything the sound quality on the Bluetooth set was better. I appreciate Low Latency is faster but for metal detecting, I really dont think you need it. :ml
