Laser Trident II - ground balance

Post by molehill » Sat Oct 20, 2012 10:16 pm

I generally have no problem manually ground balancing. I use what (as far as I know) is the standard technique with this detector, namely:

Find a clear area of ground then set Discrimination to All metal mode, set Sensitivity at about 12 o'clock, turn Threshold knob clockwise until gentle hum. Gently pump the coil up and down, adjusting Ground Balance knob to correct for positive or negative ground (until achieve a single tone).

Well I went onto some new pasture land today - last plowed about 40 years ago. The ground was VERY positive - so much so that even when the Ground Balance knob was turned fully anti-clockwise (before clicking to fixed GB) it was still registering positive ground. This is the first time I've encountered this situation. I decided to leave the Ground Balance knob turned fully anti-clockwise (still manual) and then tune for maximum sensitivity. My question is: Has anyone come up against this situation before, if so what is the correct action - manual GB as far as possible or switch to Fixed GB? Is there anything I could or should have done differently?

I should add that the session went okish - no major finds, a couple of horse harness buckles, musket balls (depth ~7") , a couple of modern copper and a George III halfpenny (depth ~7").

...I don't know if it makes any difference to ground balancing, but for the record I was using the 12x10 2D coil.

hi yes Ive had times when there are prolems with the ground so I switched to the auto ground balance setting and was surprised , the depth was still great and no problems at all to be honest the extra depth gained isnt always that much, for all the messing about most small items coins etc are well in range of the auto setting... ::g

I’ve had this problem with my Trident 2. Still not being GB’d at the maximum positive position on the pot. I was told by Dave at pentechnic that my box not being tuned to the coil (12x10DD) could POSSIBLY be to blame. Had the same problem on the same field with the smaller 11x8DD coil too, though. My F19 GB’d in that same field with no problems. Never really got to the bottom of what the problem was. This was last Summer. Recently had my Trident 2 tuned to my 9x8 concentric coil, and had a warbley threshold tone fixed by Pentechnic. Everything seems to be running at one hundred percent now, so i’m happy. Not sure if the original GB issue was related to the threshold tone issue, coils or the soil.

I am not fully up to speed re control boxes being tuned to coils, but it seems if you have a much used favourite coil then its advantegeous to have your box tuned to it. I have also read that tuning your box to the largest coil that you use is a good thing. I prefer medium sized coils generally, so i have the 11x8 coil tuned to my new Tejon, and my 9x8 web concentric tuned to my Trident 2 (UK Vaquero). I have the 12x10 DD and the 5.75 DD too, but just sticking to my general use type coils till i hit a site that requires a more specialised coil.

It is true than sometimes been on auto or preset doesn't make a huge difference but sometime it does and i rather be safe than....
