ID Challenge No.7 (21-24/10/18)

Post by thefiggis » Sun Oct 21, 2018 2:57 pm

What ho,

This is an occasional series of blah blah blah. You know the score by now. :D

I found this coin in a right sorry state and have straightened it from its being bent almost double. Thought it was a ring pull till Jenks wiped the dirt orff it. Any road up, I have my own idea of what it is but rather than lob it onto the open forum for a swift ID I thought it might be high larks to make a challenge out of it, so here it is.

ID challenge form HERE

Closes Wednesday, 24th October after 5pm.

Thanks and good luck ::g

By the way, the same caveat applies to any item not formally previously identified: there's no point in subsequently asking what the "answer" is - the answer is whatever the consensus is and if you disagree then discuss it.

I'm hopeless at these, they all look totally different to me.

but my guess is Edward II - Type 11d (1310 - 1314) - Spink -, North 1062/2
XP Deus, 11" X35 coil, WS4 back-phones, remote and an empty bank balance. Garrett Ace 250.
They told me I’d never be any good at poetry, because I’m dyslexic, but so far I’ve made 3 jugs and a vase.

I'll take a stab at Edward II penny, Canterbury mint 11b

These Edwards are difficult (for me anyway) - makes me appreciate the brilliance of Allectus even more!

Blarst. Missed a trick there. Having said I had my own idea of what it was I should have posted an answer myself. I also ID'ed it as an Edward II Classl 11b but now nobody will believe me, no matter how much tonnage of jellybeans I offer. Twit. Hey ho.

The pointers for me were exactly those described by haveyoufound1yet:

Maybe there are other pointers but these two steered me towards class 11b (it's the left ornament which is broken, by the way)

These Edwards are tricky and there may be only small differences for we amateurs to look for, but practice makes perfect and I hope you've got something from this.

Thanks and well done to all who took part ::g

I spent two hours trawling through the identification guides before realising that I knew less about Eddie pennies than when I started! :D

Congratulations to everybody who got it correct. ::g

Bah! I deliberated for ages over 11a or 11b, and as usual when I'm faced with a 50/50 choice I go for the wrong one >:P

Hey ho, at least I got the monarch right, and even that is a real challenge for me with these coins!
