THE BIG SCOTTISH RALLY VIIIAncient Scottish Borders

28, 29, 30 September 2018

Toddy’s Digs brought English style rallies to Scotland in 2011 with our Big Scottish Rally.  Since then we have held massive events over a weekend all over Scotland.  We have had visitors from all over the world at our events including some of the worlds leading metal detector manufacturers like First Texas (Fisher, Teknetics & Bounty Hunter), Whites Electronics, Minelab.  Finds have been from Neolithic to Victorian and our aim is for proper recording of these finds we search.  We will hold a charity raffle and ALL the money raised will go to a local charity of the farmers choice, In these raffles you can win excellent prizes like metal detectors and accessories.  Look at our previous charity donations here Toddy’s digs are NOT a registered charity but are a registered company and every penny raised goes to the charity chosen.

This year we will be holding our Annual Weekender Rally in the Scottish Borders (exact details next year).  Tickets will be at a largley reduced price for pre booked so if you would like to attend please check back soon for ticket sales.

I FOUND THIS ON THE WEB PLEASE DO NOT PM ME AS I HAVE NO OTHER DETAILS AS MRS GOES MAD. CHEERS. ::g

Been trying to book and get a general area of the dig to book a cottage for the wifey n hounds. Both emails have either been ignored or it’s a closed dig, shame really!

You can use Mr google to find out about the rally. I had a look yesterday. It's near a place called Doune, north of Edinburgh. Hope that helps.

I have had terrible problems trying to make contact regarding the dig, I can only assume he doesn’t want us English stomping all over again.

OK I would consider contacting them through their website http://www.toddys-digs.co.uk/hub/rallies/

The other option is their Facebook page. It seems to active and you can buy tickets for their other events on there.

However tickets are not on sale for this one at the moment on either their website or Facebook page.

Just a gentle reminder but please do not put links to Facebook or other forums on here though, thank you and good luck ::g

Just looked at the site, it says Borders, Toddy had a rally last year at Doune "Central Scotland", not certain if this one is going to be in the same area or in the borders, worth PM to him

Be interested to know myself as also planning to travel up if it isn't too far. Let us know if you hear anything.

There seems to be a promotion campaign going on but not much else. I have emailed them twice now without any response whatsoever.

Hello All. my name is Kenny. I'm new to forum but thought I'd give you some thoughts on this thread.
I live in the Scottish Borders these days, but only since 2000. I'm not aware of anyplace called Doune here, also the Borders as name suggests is near England, certainly not north of Edinburgh.

The Main towns in the Scottish borders are.. Peebles, Galashiels, Hawick, Melrose, and Selkirk.

I don't know anything about up and coming rally. but if I hear anything locally I'll post it here.

I hope this doesn't muddy the waters any.

Thanks :)

Initially this really appealed to me and I was interested and probably would have gone but having looked at the website I think this might be a dead duck, unless they are very bad at updating the web pages.

This year (2018) we will be holding our Annual Weekender Rally in the Scottish Borders (exact details next year (2019).

Is Doctor Who a member of the forum?? Because I do not know anybody else that does time travel.

I am interested in attending this rally but would need to know if it is near to Hawick and is it north or south of there so I could look at accommodation in the nearby area. Does anyone know the answer without giving away the exact location?
Thanks in advance if you can help. ::g

Big Scottish Rally, Sept. 2018

Post by Mancave-man » Wed Oct 03, 2018 1:12 pm

Attended the Big Scottish Rally over the weekend of 29/30th September and had a really enjoyable time. Briefings were carried out before each dig and the fields for each day were easy to get to and a joy to detect on being seeded and rolled and very easy to dig. Although I didn't find anything of interest myself I did see numerous Roman and Hammered coins popping up over the two days I was there. One lucky man from Hawick found a half sovereign on the Friday evening and another chap found a gold Chamber of Commerce medallion awarded to a Captain Hardy in 1901 on the Sunday. I did see that one and it was a thing of beauty, so well done to them both on terrific gold finds. There was even a man detecting in a Kilt!
Stewards were on hand to help and photograph any finds of note and were generally a helpful and happy bunch.
Had the crack with new faces and enjoyed the company of strangers. Some even came across from Ireland. It's a pity that the food stall owner's didn't turn up as a nice cuppa and a bacon roll would have been welcome but at least I had food to eat, having brought my own. Some of those that camped went hungry, poor souls. Not the organisers fault though.
Anyway can I just say a big thank you to the organisers for a successful weekend rally. Apart from the food business it was an enjoyable experience, so cheers everyone on the organisation team and well done. Maybe see you next year and have better luck!! ::g

I also attended on the Saturday and then again on the Sunday with my son whose digitek decided not to work so he just dug anything I found and he was quite happy.
I also didn't find anything of any real interest but it was still an enjoyable experience in beautiful surroundings.

Thanks for the report as its always good to get feedback on them, especially the large annual weekenders as it can be a guide for the following year.

Shame you did not find anything but that is the way it some times goes. If one person says they found nothing it never worries me, but its when most say they found nothing that the alarm bells ring ... and you said about the Roman Hammered coins so site was obviously decent (I normally ignore gold as a guide to the event as that involves too much luck!).

Could consider it for next year myself as although its a long trip its a nice area.

Were you the driver of the car with 3 others as passengers? If so we enjoyed the crack on the way back to the field where the cars were parked on Sunday. ::g

Only remember two dads with little boys. One had a BMW 4x4 parked in the big field on Sunday. The wee man walked back to the car while the dad was still detecting and had to call the son back. I was sat on the grass having a sandwich nearby if that was you. :-/
