Can't justify the cost

£47.46 + £2.50 booking + VAT for the two days add on £10 for camping

Then added another £50 for fuel

Booked my tickets just now. That’ll be my second weekend back in the UK. I think the cost is actually pretty good. I’ll be getting a small hire van and living out of that for the weekend, that is, if the ship I work on is not at sea that weekend. Worth the gamble I think.

Where else can you camp for £10 for three days ::g Brilliant.

Really looking forward to it [:)

I'm in the same camp (if you'll excuse the pun). I can waste money as best as the next person but this is the equivalent of a 'drive and survive' i used to do going fishing before getting priced out of it. 'Plus VAT' for walking in a field?

Enjoy everyone, i'm sure it'll be a cracking weekend and i hope you all dig it clean.

Hi, I’m here this weekend. A large hammered hoard was found early in the day and I honestly don’t know what the final count was but I know it was scattered and with a vessel found after. Lots of gold and silver.

Unfortunately I didn’t find the hoard but it is a great site, I’ve managed a hammered Commonwealth Half Groat, a nice Roman and a Medieval Zoomorphic Spout (not complete). Lots of signals which is often not the case at these events.

That is going to make for one happy land owner, although I fear he might be blighted by nighthawkers in the future.

Yes unfortunately so, the site does appear to be undetected which is very surprising. Hopefully a few more finds will be made tomorrow!

Also I have been on a paid dig where someone found a Saxon penny and very quickly a small area was being detected by a fair few detectorists. And another dig where a very nice gold posey ring was found and very quickly again it was like bees to honey as a swarm (correct dictionary definition of three or more detectorists) Of detectorists descended.

Is there a detectorists code that covers such a situation As if I started pulling a scattered horde out of the ground I would have to play my cards very close to my chest as if it started to attract other detectorists I would be very tempted to tell them to do one, and probably some spade waving :D

From the official sources it appears the ‘free for all’ was actually only authorised people. The officials from the event and the family and friends of the finder.

Mark, who organisers the event, is well used to these situations. I know everyone at the event was provided with the official guidelines, supplied by the FLO, on what to do in the event of a hoard find. I wasn’t there but he tweeted last night that official guidelines had been printed to hand out.

Shame the coverage looks chaotic but hopefully the reality was more organised. Certainly the latest tweets imply nothing went missing and everyone was comfortable that the site had and is secure ::g

It’s important the detecting codes are followed in these instances and it appears that actually (to the best of their ability without the FLO being present as he sadly couldn’t attend) it was.

Hi Oxgirl

From what I saw it was definitely conducted in a very careful and professional manner. The site was very secure and they spent all day on the hoard extrication, so I’m sure that all was done correctly.

I found a papal bulla on a paid dig last year. It was interesting how many detectorists consequently found the tiny paddock behind the farm house more interesting than all the other fields.

I never made it there this weekend as I have been suffering terrible headaches every day since Thursday.
Kind of gutted really, £60 I am never going to get back and a weekend spent doing nothing rather than detecting.

Really pleased for the lad who found the hoard and hope it ends up in the local museum.

Hope you are OK Chip - that’s more important. Go see your doctor, please :-*

Nice to see the coins after the first scattered ones turned up. The hoard seems to have been shallow buried and so when the land was cultivated and reseeded the upper layers were scattered. The gold seemed to have been in the upper layers of the hoard and so were well bashed up after meeting the power harrow or something similar when the field was cultivated.

The location was adjacent to the base of a natural steep sided now dry valley cutting through the hills which would have allowed easy access from the Thames floodplain up into and over the wooded hills.
How the scatter had not been noticed before is a question because the area is heavily shot and some of the coins would have been visible on the surface after cultivation so i presume the shooters walking over the area were too busy looking upwards for birds.

I dont know how other detctorists fared elsewhere on the rally, but the soil was very difficult to dig because of the abundance of flint cobbles. Lots and lots of shotgun caps, bullet cases and modern rubbish which made all the field hard to work. Still a good day out to meet friends and of course view some of the hoard coins.
