I've been out a couple of times since switching to 1.17 and I've had problems both times. I don't know if it's the sw change, the very dry ground or general gormlessness, but I'm getting erratic signals. I've always gotten a lot of chirps which disappear if I swing back over the spot, but now it often "loses" a signal which seems strong. I swing and get a beep, go back over it a few times to try to pinpoint it, with it beeping right to left and left to right both. Then it disappears.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm not changing anything, not varying my swing, not even moving my feet, and it disappears, sometimes coming back, then disappearing again. It's driving me nuts!

Is there, perhaps, within the software update, a notable change which means your regularly used settings now need to be modified slightly?

In other words, as Alan Black implies, perhaps your usual detecting settings have been made more sensitive by the software update, so you'll have to dial something down a little to get the detector responding in the manner you prefer.

It will mean a bit of experimentation, obviously, e.g. use a test target, the response for which you are reasonably certain of, and tweak your usual settings to get back to the responses you are familiar with?

I'm not a Nokta Legend user, but my suggestion is the process I would follow if a software update modified the detector's responses. 🙂

Might seem obvious but I know people haven't before...have you factory reset following installing the update?

Thanks for the replies, all good ideas. Here's more info on what changes I made

I installed 1.17, did factory default reset, set on Field setting, no mods, usually have to run down around 18 on sensitivity to keep the chirps down, I creep it up until it gets too noisy, usually around 21 or 22 at most.

What mostly confuses me is the erratic signal. It's different than the random chirps, which beep once and never again.

I can get what seems to be a strong, 2 way signal which may repeat a couple of times and then disappear, without me changing anything -- digging, finding a different angle, etc. I hear what seems to be a positive signal and swing back and forth to find the centre, and it disappears.

I agree that I need to set up an experiment, but I was wondering if any other Legend users experienced this.

Given the above, possible coil issue? Check the cabling and such and if possible perhaps try another coil

I hope not, MrKeen, but thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to see if I can find a Legend user who will let me play with a coil. The machine has only been used a small amount, but things can always go wrong.

I've been using 1.17 for a few months now. I don't have any issues and using M3 I can run Sens at 26 to 29 - with regular ground balancing to keep things quiet. Pinpointing is a little less precise than before using the stock coil but as I tend to favour the LG24 it's not an issue for me. M2 is always more chattery (made worse by manually GB'ing - no idea why, it's always been like that for me!) but sticking to preset GB and dropping Sens a notch or two settles things down - something it sometimes didn't using earlier firmware versions. Overall, I'm quite happy with 1.17.
Nokta Legend, LG35, LG28 & LG24 coils + Accupointer.
C-Scope CS6MXi.

Previously, early 80s to early 90s top-end C-Scopes and Tesoros. Early 90s onwards, several Whites "big box" detectors including the wonderful V3i - which is much missed.

Hey, just been reviewing the manual and perhaps this could help? Maybe give that a go and let us know how you get on 👍🏻

Further to my previous comment, seems like this is great for understanding the ground you're working with. What a machine! Loving it more as I learn 🙌🏻
