Hi
I'm trying to get my head around Ferrous limits & tones on my new manticore.
I have had hammered and silver coins from the 2 fields that also contain a lot of iron and gun dog cartridges.
Im getting high tones pinging depite the TDI showing within the target is within the Ferrous limits (upper 6 lower 4).
Sensitivity and recovery speeds im happy with.
Should i be listening & digging these higher tones as I was expecing more grunt from those within Ferrous limits.
I suppose Dig & see might be the advice, however, I think i'd be constantly digging holes !

The Ferrous Limits don't work the way that you seem to think think that they do. As you raise Ferrous Limit 1 ordinary iron targets, like nails, are rejected. Ferrous 2 helps you spot other types of iron like bottle caps and odd shaped iron. Lots of iron still remains withing the open bit of the screen but often you can ID these by the iron sounds or target traces. Unless you have the Ferrous Limits set really high, which significantly reduces depth, you cannot always dig on sound alone, you need to look at the screen. Good targets generally appear along the centre line and in a few other places as a blob rather than a line. You just have to learn these by trial and error.Karpykev wrote: Wed Mar 12, 2025 1:16 pm Hi

What detector did you use before and are you using All Metal?

It sounds like the high tones are iron breaking through the F1 limit which will sound as non-ferrous, so you may need to just raise F1 a little. ![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

Shot gun cartridge wise, ibelieve the older ones were brass base with copper / brass alloy primers and the now adays ones are steel base with the as above primers, ,that's why u can get good signals off the old ones and mixed signals off the new ones with the steel bases and copper primers, they are a pain to be honest, ull get a nice signal to dig down and eventually find just the primer sit there

You are absolutely right, the Manticore is so sensitive that it detects a 2mm primer with extreme ease, once I had to abandon a field because I lost patience after finding about fifty of them in an hour, there were only those

Minelabs reply to this, when I first got my Manticore was that it was designed to make you stop more.
From experience I would say that sparky iron is exactly that. Whatever you choose as your ferrous limit it will spark a target response. Set it to eight it will spark at nine, set it at three it will spark at four. As Fred said, you need to use your screen to see the trace.
Also, if you set your limits too high, good targets can catch the edge of your limits and give an iron grunt along with the target tone resulting in missing deep good targets.
I set my ferrous limits really low as sparky iron is going to spark anyway whether it be at four or eight. This approach gives good depth and once you have your target tones logged in your head make the machine super responsive (and super deep).
Hope that makes sense.
The other option is the stabiliser, however, even on setting one, I've found this not only stabilises the machine but can also stabilise some iron, particularly nails. (I tried it for a couple of months.) It also messes with the target tones, making the depth and size of targets difficult to determine.
Remember, if your new "girlfriend" is talking you may as well listen to what she is saying rather than blocking some out and missing something important.![Thinking [42/]](./images/smilies/42_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

And if she is your "wife", what then? Okay to ignore?Stevensimmons wrote: Mon Mar 17, 2025 5:48 pm Remember, if your new "girlfriend" is talking you may as well listen to what she is saying rather than blocking some out and missing something important.
