ACE 250 or 300i

Post by atticjnr » Wed Jul 11, 2018 12:08 pm

Hey all,

Still doing my research into this before I commit to buying a detector!

I know the differences between the ACE 250 and the 300i, however I was wondering from the point of view of being a beginner - would I be better off learning on a 250 and paying attention to the beeps, rather than relying on both the beeps AND the numbers on the readout whilst I'm learning?

Or am I just being silly and I should make the most of having both numbers and beeps?

Hopefully I've worded that well enough to make sense!

Dan

Hello Dan ::g I'm not currently a Garrett user but the question and answer are common for almost any detector that has an ID meter. Listen to the response you're getting as a priority and use the meter only for a double check. The ID meter being only a guide originally designed for '
coin shooting' in the USA. It should not be relied upon for accuracy of target identity or depth.

My take on the 'which one' question would be the 300i as it's said to be an up-date to the 250 and I expect for that reason, it is currently the favoured choice for newcomers going the Garrett way at the moment.

Having said all that, take note of all the replies you are given and then make a considered choice which should include which one will best suit your purpose. There's also no harm in being partly influenced by style and looks if that also helps to create expectation and confidence. ::g

My only other recommendation would be to search with slow sweeps keeping the search coil level at all times (especially at the end of each swing) and keep checking until you're a natural at it ::g

Good Luck - Regards ss47

You’ll probably find the sounds will come as second nature after a while,
I’ve not owned a Garrett myself but had a couple of friends who did. The main complaint with the 150 & 250 was that they weren’t too good on wet sand on the beach, though they were good machines in-land.
If you intend to do any beach work it’s a simple choice to make. Plus, from experience most of us would tell you a cheap deal may turn out to be very expensive one.
Aim high and last longer ::g

Hi, I started a year ago and after lots of research bought an Ace 250. I've never used a 300, but the 250 was a great little machine, just picked up a boxful of finds from my local FLO who has been assessing them. I now have about three pages of finds on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. Very easy to use, no numbers to look at and uncomplicated. Now I'm a little bit hooked and am selling the 250 having bought a more advanced machine. As I said, never used the 300, but the 250 was a brilliant starter choice for me. Good luck.

Rarely do manufactures new machines preform worse than their previous model. Not that the improvement will be much. There's not be that much difference though a 1980's machine will not be far behind the newest models.

If it was me I would go for the latter designed. 300i but with either you will make great finds.

The 300 has a higher frequency (it goes to 8khz v 6khz for the 250) and it’s adjustable! Plus you get 4 iron discrimination nodes (versus 2 for the 250) - there is no contest here. Get the 300 please. And if you want to learn by tones put a piece of card or tape over the screen - problem solved!

Great deal from our shop too https://www.metaldetectingauction.com/l ... ras/104212

Thanks everyone for the awesome feedback in here!

You've definitely made my mind up that I want to go for the 300 rather than the 250.

Few bits selling on eBay at the moment - hopefully I'll be able to pull the trigger next week.

Think I'll start looking for some local farmer contact details to approach about getting a permission to start on!

Just watch - there are counterfeit detectors about so be careful - especially on auction sites!

Oh, I meant I'm selling some bits to get some cash together on eBay.
