Hip mount the ace 250

Post by urbanprospector » Mon Aug 25, 2014 9:08 pm

I am planning to hip mount my ace 250.

I found a seller of the 5 pin male and female connectors for Garrett coils in the U.K.

I am going to a local Cable shop, for the 5 core cable, who will hopefully make me an extension cable of approx. 1 meter in length.

The connectors are £7 and the cable £14 per meter + charge to connect

I will then get a bum bag, pouch etc. for £5 to £10

I was thinking a bum bag would be better, as it will be less rigid than a belt mount. So not putting any stress on the connection into the control box as I swing.

Any help or advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Just a quick question, why? The main weight would be in the coil surely? I used to find it was quite well balanced and everything was at thumb reach to change settings / pin point. The hardest part must be putting it down to dig with the wiring?

Have you thought about trying a harness before going to such extreme measures mate?

I used a strimmer shoulder strap and a bunji and it worked perfectly.

Hi

f8met - I am an ex-power lifter and my joints are well worn. Also 2 slipped discs in lower back.

I will be going on my first hunt tomorrow, so I will know more then.

Harry Digger and Denis - I am a bit hesitant to go down the harness route as I believe it will cause stiffness/pain in the neck. I maybe wrong. I will look into a strimmer shoulder strap as suggested by Denis. At that price it cant hurt to give it a go.

Thanks for the input.

I'm an ex miner with back damage and have no problem with the strimmer strap once you get it correctly adjusted, it shoud rest next to your hip with the coil just skimming the surface.
Hope this helps

First dig exceeded my expectations.

The 25o will do me very nicely indeed. Expecting discomfort later on this evening. On the whole the md was better than expected. It was light enough not to cause pain to joints and lower back. I did have a backup, thanks to Denis, in the form of two bungees attached to an old back pack/harness. Although it was not needed.

TBH I spent most of my time on my hands and knees. Shovel/trowel is not upto the job. Need a spade. All holes were filled in, to ensure residents would not be injured. Blisters to prove it as well.

Unexpectedly, my biggest problem was a lot of horses. After making eye contact with the biggest, I was surrounded and had to grab all the equipment and walk as fast as I could. For some reason they followed me, until I had approx. 20 horses following me. I made my way towards Matt, who found it all hilarious.

Matt was an excellent hunting companion and teacher. We had a good laugh. Once he stopped laughing, he even showed me how to approach the horses. I then left Matt. I was never bothered again.

Found a button, a small coin, possibly a sixpence, a padlock, a large nail, a small nail, some foil, an unidentified piece of metal and what appeared to be old hard drive/optics cable's. Basically I dug every find. Not forgetting a ring pull.

6 hours flew by.

Will now do some research on the specific field.

If the hunt is this much fun, I can not wait for a find with some age, requiring research. I am hooked.
