As for your question it does sound as if you probably have it set to long as the AT pro, like all the Garretts I have seen, is a well balanced machine and you should be able to swing it for a considerable time with no ill effects.
By having it to long it means that you are having to hold it out in front of you and therefore having to support the weight of it, rather than it being at a lower angle and a natural swing with the controlbox and arm rest above your hand being a natural counterbalance to the coil.
If you have the stem to short you either finish up stooping or having a very small swinging circle that is nearly hitting your shoes.
Everybody is different in how they walk, a 6' person that is very upright would need a longer stem than if they stooped slightly., and what they find comfortable for them.
I suggest you shorten the stem a hole at a time until you find what is comfortable for you, but when its right the machine will feel much lighter and counter balance rather than being supported.
