Garrett 400i vs EuroAce

Post by jeap » Tue Oct 17, 2017 11:08 am

Hi all,

I've had my EuroAce for roughly 10 months now, enjoying it immensely and won't be changing detectors anytime soon. However, I've been reading a few topics with the 400i in and am wondering if this is a much better machine? From a quick look on the web there's not a huge price difference between the two and am assuming the newness of the 400i makes the technology better. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Cheers,

Jeap

The main differences are:
1. the numeric displays (gives a target number rather than indicating where it is on a scale between ferrous and non ferrous so should be more useful)
2. It runs on a higher kHz level (10 instead of 8.25)

I'd say it was worth the few extra pounds just for the numeric display!

Those points would also be a bonus for me, but I just don't think I could live with the "ding dong" sounds! :))

The Garratt 400i also gives you the iron checker feature with the added iron audio. Personally I prefer to run the 400i in all metal which is 3 tones with the iron in the lower range obviously. If you like to run with discrim though, the iron check button can be handy if you only want to dig the pure signals and it's another added feature.

The euro Ace also has the pro-formance DD coil and now that you are used to it I doubt you would see your finds rate go up if you moved to the 400i, however, some say the circuits in the 400i are influenced by the tech of the AT Pro.

I would seek out some expert advice before you do anything, maybe contact Nigel at Regton. He speaks highly of the 400i and could give you some comparison feedback in regards you Euroace.

I used to have a euroace.
Really good machine and went deep but in the end the sounds got to me.
I'm thinking of getting one for my daughter as it worked so well and was nice and simple.
The 400 looks good as well but i'm not sure if it would be too much for a little un?

Not a problem really, you can still set the 400i up just as simple as any other Ace and just ignore the Iron Tone button. I guess as she grows she will have a little more machine to play with.

Interesting points about the bell tone, it's the one thing I dislike about the machine. It certainly encourages me to get digging and investigating though, rather than going back and forth trying to make my mind up. I can't take many sweeps with that clanging going on.

Interesting answers - thanks all for your input. I'm happy with the EuroAce and have found some pretty amazing stuff with it. I agree that the beeping is a little intrusive. I forgot headphones this afternoon and the pasture I was on has a number of houses on the other side of the road. I was conscious that the noise might drive them batty so stayed on the bottom half of the field.
