Hand Grips & Hairspray..

Post by WIGHTDIAMOND » Wed Jun 13, 2018 8:45 pm

Not sure if this has ever been posted before. I'm sure the experienced old timers and those who are bikers will know this trick but in case newbies struggle I thought I'd post a tip:

If you decide to some day replace the foam hand grip on your detector you might notice that it's all but impossible to slide into place. Spray the handle/shaft with hairspray first and the grip slides smoothly and easily into place without stretching or deforming. Then let it sit over night and the hairspray will set like glue and hold it perfectly in place. If you ever need to replace that one the now dry hairspray is easy to wipe off. I learnt this trick from installing new grips on my motorbikes and it works like a charm.

Good tip ::g

So good in fact that I’ve moved it to the Tips and DIY section ;)

Never heard of that but it's a cracking tip and thanks for sharing it.

Mind you, it does make me wonder what hairspray actually does to the old barnet.

You're very welcome. The grip on my newly acquired Ace had seen better days so was time for a new one. They actually sell identical foam grips to these for motorcycles. I had a set once on an old Harley.

As said, that's a very useful tip and one to remember ::g

You're obviously an avid and capable DIY enthusiast, the proof of which is the beautifully made large search-coil, fashioned from English oak no less and featured in your pic :D
