Home made camera / Phone steady

Post by Steve_T » Thu Apr 26, 2018 10:36 pm

After a question / Comment today “ Cracking pictures…….is there a “how too guide” in layman’s terms? “ Well this is a poor mans set up if you like

you will like this if you like chocolate or fruit....lol

Got me thinking…..for a way to make something to steady the camera or phone when taking a picture if you don't have tripod or editing software and need to take a picture for ID without a lot of effort (its taken me longer to compile this post)

This took me 10 minutes to make and take the pictures, the key thing when taking close ups is keeping the phone or camera still to prevent blur, also when steady you can focus better and adjust the lighting with most phone cameras, its difficult to hold a camera or phone still when taking a picture

I used a Millionaires Bites container with 4 panels cut out and a hole in the bottom then the bottom becomes the top where the phone or camera goes
Also used a fruit container with a hole cut in the bottom which then becomes the top, this works well because it lets more light in and its diffused a bit.

If you haven't got these there must be something similar that can be used or you will have the perfect excuse to go and buy some

Used an angle poise lamp but a small standard lamp or daylight is good enough with some white paper to help the light

OK this is quite crude but will help to get a better image

The pictures of the coin have not been cropped or adjusted except to resize to post, its that simple to get a good image for posting

Heres the tubs

That works a treat Steve, just the job! Simple, effective and practical to use and if that isn't enough, it probably costs next to nowt to produce. What's not to like!
Thanks for sharing your idea with us ::g Regards ss47

That's a great idea Steve, thanks for sharing. I can see mine getting thrown away after each use, and having to make a new one every time though.....MMMmmm Chocolate!
I've done the 'buckle boogie', the 'musket-ball mambo' and even the 'silver shuffle', but sadly still no 'gold dance'. You're really gonna know it when you see it though!

As others have said, a great tip and I can’t think why nobody has thought of this before.
I use a small tripod but this looks a better idea and I’m going to give it a go.
Thanks.

This is a great idea. I'm always having trouble with shadow and reflection, too, so I'm going to try a 4 pint plastic milk jug as a diffuser. I'll let you know results.

The milk thing works a treat. Needs some modification, because it's a bit flimsy, but I reckon if 2 bases are joined together (one inside the other) it would work really well. No reflections, no shadows. Brilliant idea, Steve!

Just an update and bump due to people struggling to get photos with scales

It’s not hard, this was a 20 minute job,

1, find fruit container or similar and cut hole

2, find a measure

3, take picture with phone resting on fruit container with hole in

4, crop images

5, resize

6, post

I resized on phone app, (Photo & Picture Resizer)

chose files to attach to post

Previewed then submitted

The fruit container
