Old pound coins

Post by Orval »

I ventured into a fairly large post office branch with a jar of greenish old pound coins and wasn't successful at turning it into more modern beer money.
I did a bit of internet searching but many google hits are ouf of date. The Bank of England says it doesn't take old pound coins and the Royal Mint only buys valuable coins.
Does this mean old pound coins are now just brass scrap metal?

I don't know how accurate this is but it will give you an idea of their worth.
You would need 2,564 pound coins to actually be carrying around just £1 in real metal terms.

According to MoneySavingExpert article from March, Barclays, Halifax, Lloyds, Nationwide, NatWest and Santander allow customers to deposit old coins and notes into your account.

Can't vouch for this but may be worth a try.

I think that is a bit pessimistic. Brass is about 3 pounds/kg. I sort all my copper alloy, lead and iron and get about 50 pounds every few months from the metal recycling dealer. Getting face value on old pounds would be better though..

I did it yesterday. I took 18 of them to the post office and paid them in to my account. I think that might be the difference? They might not exchange them but you should be able to pay them in to your account, with a card.

At our post office they can be, on occasions grumpy and unhelpful. Incidentally - rough old new £1 will drop into the coin machines at the supermarkets 😉

Twice recently I've paid in a hundred quids worth into Nationwide with no bother. All fairly well cleaned though. 👍

I also use cleaned spending money in the self service tills in supermarkets although badly worn coins sometimes won't work. The machines may refuse to take any more if you attempt to use too many duff ones but if it locks up simply pay the balance with a note and the machine resets itself. 😁

Sell the £10 note on a auction site you should get more for it that face value, you should be able to pay the old round pound into your account at the bank (but they do expect them to be clean) good luck

Often the bank teller will be stumped by a bag of old pound coins, and need to ask the manager if they take them. They took them all, tarnished ones and forgeries, as they are not going back into circulation. [81/]

Your bank should accept them, I've cashed old pound coins recently no problems. In fact, about 3 years ago, I cashed £50 worth of cupro-nickel shillings and florins at my bank...It was a fun experience as none of the coin weighing machines could count them, so about 3 cashiers, went through them one by one.

It's getting to the point where some places "only take card"....wait til they pour your beer then say you've only got cash...they soon take it.

The pound coins are made of aluminium bronze alloy with about 90% copper so they wont go in the brass bin at the scrappy. They might have a price per kg if you have enough.

I have always wonders if they will take the old style cupro nickel coins as scrap with Nickel trading at £30,000 a tonne. Anyone tried that ?

You are correct but as previous post threads have pointed out - what is clean? My bank refused to take them as they were not shiny. Mmmm..
