9” HF coil or 11” X35 coil...which one?!

Post by hudini16 » Thu Jan 03, 2019 7:47 pm

Hi guys,

I have a conundrum that I could use some help with.

I am looking at buying a new coil; either the 9” HF coil or the 11” X35 coil but I can’t choose which one. I currently use the factory 9” coil and have had some fantastic finds from the tiniest of hammered all the way up to roman brooches and a set of false teeth!

I have read lots of forum posts and watched quite a few YouTube vids but just can’t decide. I am hoping that this new coil will give me a slight advantage over my current coil and help me to pinpoint those signals that I may be missing. The land I detect is quite rich in early medieval and roman so help to find small silvers, cut quarters and small Romans’ is what I’m after :)

Happy New Year to all!

Thanks!
Jack

We use both the 9inch HF and the x35 and to honest we get about the same results, both find cut quarters and little Romans. If the items are there both coils will find them.

I have an 11” X35 and a HF elliptical.

It’d be elliptical for me if I was choosing. But I’ve struggled with the X35 where others don’t appear to have X(

No I haven’t. I know it is slightly different software wise and those that have them love them. But I love my elliptical =)) . Wouldn’t mind trying one to see what they are like though ::g

Well just for interest, I have the original 11” black coil and also the 9” HF round and between them they seem to cover all my search situations so I really have no use for the X35 coils. The X35 coils only work with V5.x which in my own experience does not work well with my coils, unlike V4.1 which is great.
I have no personal experience of the X35 coils apart from other users experiences, good/bad, as you also know.
I'd suggest getting a used HF coil, whether round or elliptical for your Roman site and run it in 26khz or higher with 2.5 reactivity. ::g

Do you have any reference to the 'different software' that the HF's use?
My understanding is that the elliptical is marketed as a specialized coil providing better target separation amongst iron but is a bit more prone to EMI, whereas the round is also really quite good at that but gives a better depth. I guess that they are both particularly nice to use. You could've borrowed mine if we lived closer! :D ::g

I won't bother....I've the big black and the 9" old black and the elip hf neither have upped my finds rate on mates permission and rallies....x35 from reports seems problematic and I've had " losing coil issues with the hf " I now tend to use the dues very rarely now ..... don't worry on what your missing as it might not b there in the first place !( which I struggle with rl; ) Last yr , 10 x 5 hrs outings with hf coil 1x hammie ( 88 outings last yr on muck / sand ) , 66 outing since had it for 12 hammies ( on muck ) . I've found if u are happy with the machine is the main issue ..what done me with the dues woz on a mates permission with his 10 yr old fbs ...he got a signal " what do u think ? " I woz with stock 9" my own program nowt...then went through factory programs nowt....he dug It up not silly deep....a 6" bit of Ali tube....that moment haunts me .. Good luck with your choice

Hi, I’ve had 9” and 11” standard black coils. Sold the 9” As I now have hf 9” round.
All work well but I’m now firmly fixed with the hf as it seems to me to produce clearer sounds than the11” black, They ping more so if that makes sense. It also works better on high trashy areas with better separation.
The 11” goes deeper( for me) with its lower frequencies.

I know that this isn’t quite what you asked but it’s what I’ve experienced personally with the coils I have had.

I hope it helps

It was on the XP website when they released v4.1 to explain why the hf coils didn’t need to be updated. Plus I know Gary mentioned it somewhere too :D

I don’t think its a specialist coil and I get good depth with it. I used it on pasture today and easily found more than one half penny at over 8” depth.

Shame I don’t live closer or we could swap for a day and compare them ::g I suspect we’d find them very similar.

On a Roman site highly mineralised the HF coils out do the original black coils hands down on un dug targets there built for hot soil , i have tested this against a friend with his standard 9" black coil he couldn't believe the difference on the un dug signals both using the same settings he was in 18Khz and i was in 28Khz..White round hf coils are awesome bits of kit highly recommend ::g

I concur but I cannot offer any scientific reasoning. My 9" hf round coil just seems that much sharper/clearer. I don't leave home without it :D
p.s. But technique and programme settings obviously have to be included in the mix.

I have both coils and only been detecting for six months used my starter machine garrett 300i for two of them then upgraded to the dues with x35 for the last few until christmas where i received a brand new hf coil. it has allowed me to go over the same previously undetected land three times have had success with all three machines. i have only used 5.2 no experience of previous programs but i think my favorite is the hf maybe because its new and i did find a hammy and old silver ring on my first session with it. i will use both deus coils over the next few months over the same land and compare. i don,t think you can go far wrong with either coil - they will both fine good things. most of my hammys i have found have come on the highest frequency on both coils on different programs and i have been lucky to walk over them. sorry i can,t give you one is better than the other you will enjoy either
cheers paint happy hunting

On my first outing with the 9” round HF coil I went to test it on a paddock which I had hunted out with the older 11” black coil. Within ½ hour it had found a small gold fob ring above large iron which I know was masked to my other coil as I had covered that very spot several times, so I was quite impressed with what a higher frequency can do in the right situation. Both coils have found about the same number of hammered and both would have found any of them. The things need to be there to find, but you'll never know if you're actually missing any targets. I like the sharper response of the HF coil and find that it still gives about the same depth as the 11”.
