Not a hinge. If you have a stroll through the Ordnance forum you'll find similar finds, such as on this thread

Yep, Mills grenade part.
I find these by the hundredweight, along with the baseplugs. I have a slightly more complete one to post as soon as it has been properly cleaned up.

I have TONS of this stuff on one field, too much to detect over. If shrapnel, then HOW? From where? Anti-aircraft shells? My field is where at least two WW2 bombers crashed through the end of a runway and disintegrated, perhaps riddled with shrapnel? Liam

Re: ID mills boms bits
Toom, the parts in your photos are from the center tube of the mills bomb that holds the spring loaded striker. When it explodes the the tube is compressed onto the spring and you get that crinkled effect.

As has been identified, this is the remains of the central column from a No. 36M grenade. The column holds the striker, spring and detonator. When the grenade explodes, it firstly compresses the column against the spring, hence making the grooves, before the (a few milliseconds later) grenade itself blows apart.

Re: m36 grenade mills boms bits
I finally remembered the farmer mentioning that they used to practice lobbing grenades from behind a concrete structure on one of the fields that I now detect, so thats the mystery solved, hope they all managed to explode! Liam
