Possible bullet?

Post by Pmacb »

Hi All,

I found this at a dig in the summer in North Essex and having recently cleaned the mud off I wonder if it is bullet? It is approximately 25mm long and 15mm in diameter, the top looks curved but partly flattened because of impact? Any suggestions on age etc appreciated

Thanks

It is indeed a bullet. I'm pretty sure it's a 0.58 calibre round for the Martini Henry rifle, which were introduced to the British military around 1850 I believe.
Hope that's helpful!

Thanks that is very helpful, it seems quite a large bullet type, but then Martini Henry rifles were quite large and heavy!
