Dumb question...

There are lots of pointers on the market, but... would a diy type metal/joist scanner work just as well?

It will indicate a metal presence but it will be pretty much an impractical device in use due to it's design. It will probably be more difficult to use for actually 'pin-pointing'n the find.

If you're DIY orientated, it would be fairly straight forward task to disassemble one and re-jig it to a more practical design suitable for your detecting. Cheap as chips! Are you ready for challenge?
Good Luck. ::g Regards ss47

This is a question that is often asked, particularly when one considers the cost of the standard hobby offering vs the cheaper scanner. While the cheaper scanners work, they are generally not as effective as the real deal, mainly because they dont have a proximity function and are fairly clumsy in design. If you do go for the real deal please be aware that there are cheap imitations out there, so its best to buy from an approved supplier.
