Bonkers Ace250

Post by nickw » Wed Jul 11, 2018 10:20 pm

Out on my grass field permission tonight and three times the detector when bonkers. I was on a trashy bit of the field and was finding it difficult to get a suitable setting to stop so many signals. The bonkers moments had the detector sounding off of its own accord. Even when it was doing it and I lifted the coil up way above the ground it continued going
nuts. The battery was one stop down from full but even when changed to new ones it did it again. Any ideas as to what is going on?
I was having a bad evening as I was digging on good signals and finding nothing. Only common theme was chalk deposits. Can chalk give a good signal?

I experienced something similar when I had an ACE 250, and it also went 'bonkers' as you describe - even with the coil held high above the ground.

I found that a small piece of sand from the beach had got into the connector plug, and I solved the problem by cleaning it out with a needle type object.

The sand was not visible/obvious at the time.

Thanks for your help. I'll give it a good old clean!

The only other thing I can think of is that the connector plug isn't tightened fully. When mine went nuts - I thought it was broken, but it wasn't.

Just to add a useful point regarding detector plugs, sockets and switches, It's good maintenance practice to occasionally treat these parts with a light squirt of 'electronic switch cleaner' (about £3.00 or so). However, do not be tempted to overdo it and end up flooding the subject parts, otherwise there is a risk of creating a short circuit. Dispensing a light 'mist' is all that's required.

Also high on the don't list:- Do not use WD40 as an alternative to switch cleaner as after a time, the solvent in it evaporates leaving a 'waxy varnish' like residue which in turn is liable to cause resistance and poor conductivity problems.

I'v seen some serious neglect of detecting equipment over the years with feeble excuses such as "it's got to look used". There's nowt wrong with them that keeps their tackle clean and ship shape' as my old dad used to say. ::g All the best and good luck sorting the problem. ::g Regards ss47

I trust that the coil cable is secured to the shaft and not wobbling about causing false signals. Could it be caused by electrical interference, EMI ?

I am no expert, but I doubt chalk could give any signal. From memory, I only had possible falsing problems with the ACE 250 under certain beach conditions. Overall, on fields I thought that it was pretty stable.

If you get a signal, and then try again from a 90 degree angle and get the same signal again, then I imagine that it is probably genuine.

I only ever had problems with my EuroAce on wet saline beach sand and then one day (probably when changing coils in the field) I got wee bit of dirt in the socket/plug and it began behaving just as you described. Sometimes a bit of Verdigris on the pins can give you the same problem.

The cable is all snuggly wound around the shaft. Perhaps because I was close to the old pub building I could have got electrical interference. I'll give all another go soon!

My 400i did exactly what you describe in one section of my field... sounding off everywhere. It hated the overhead cable.
