If you have only just got the 400i then I would wait a while. The 400i is a good performer, and I was informed by a retailer that it has a lot of the same tech as behind the AT Pro. The Max looks good but I would wait for plenty of reviews in the magazines and from trusted people.

It's a lot of money to spend and you should really take your time on the decision in my honest opinion. You don't want to fork out all that cash and find it's got more buttons but ultimately seems to do the same thing, which is possible. They say it's a bit deeper?

There's a lot of machines out there, and in the pipeline. The 400i performs well in my opinion and I also run a Dues, all the same I enjoy using the 400i. Don't rush in is my honest advice.

You're not going to get better advice than that from Max above. The 400i is a highly capable machine and has turned up all sizes and depths of finds. You'll learn a great deal about detecting by using it and really getting to know it.

I have no experience of the AT Max but it'll have to go some to put the 400i to shame.
Essential equipment:
Some sort of electrical gubbins(I'm told it's a Deus). In various colours

even the coil that the device comes with is really decent. I have a neil tornado and will give you a better coverage but the standard coil is really decent as i keep manage to find buttons even 10 inches down, so i still use more the standard coil than the neil one(but i'm on a horse paddock permission now)

Imo just go with standard equipment until the fever(for buying other equipment) is gone and then decide what you really need.

Good advice. The standard coil is good, and my Tornado doesn't make much difference either. I have had the odd target that seems a little deeper but it doesn't transform the machine, take your time over that one as well and choose carefully when/if you do.

Excellent advice above.....
Seriously after watching my pal and his 400 with standard as supplied coil work stubble fields for the past 6 weeks, you won't leave much in the ground.
Master your machine.
Maybe a bigger coil on pasture/parkland for coverage.
The only other upgrade might be headphones..the Garrett ones as supplied ,though excellent, tend to hurt his lugs after an hour or two.

Just as an example of how good the standard 400i coil is, I had previously gridded an area which yielded three brooch partefacts and went over it again with the Deus (my beloved 400i is now the property of 'er indoors and I can apparently have access to it if I'm nice from time to time). Here's what I missed:
0 True, there were some scappy bits which came up from depth when on 4khz but nothing of note. The 10khz on the standard 400i coil punches down to a decent enough depth not to miss much. Put your trust and faith in it and it'll reward you handsomely. I'm sure you will upgrade in time as we all do, but it might be best to establish a detecting style which suits your land and then look at the options.

I know a couple of guys with 400i's, they seem to uncannily regularly find hammies. So they seem quite a capable machine, I would probably not be in a hurry to change it if I had one.

My missus came along a couple of times this summer on some quiet land. 1st time she used the Deus and me the Garrett, second time she tried the Garrett and I had the Deus. On both occasions she found tokens and artefacts and I had nothing. Regardless of which machine we had, she walked over them and I didn't.

Coils - If I was buying an aftermarket coil for the 400i now, it would be a smaller one. I actually think it would enhance the machine more than a bigger one.
