UK 2024

UK trip 2024

"Oh my bags are packed I'm ready to go." Picture that! Really. Not a chance as I had packed the camera recharger but forgot the most important part.....the camera. Son of a seahorse.

The trip across the pond was uneventful, smooth and relaxing. For once Air Canada got it right with no turbulence , good films and in flight service. Arriving at Heathrow I had no idea who it was that I was meeting other then a fellow named Scott.

Thirty minutes of wondering around arrivals I was still "Scottless." Looked to my left called a name and there he was entering arrivals. Relief. Another hour and we arrived at his abode greeted by his "children." What had I gotten myself into as a swam of hair and tongues engulfed me. These were Scotts 3 pets; Ace a frisky bulldog mix, Poppy an over the hill Yorkie and Bugsy who would have been more at home in a team pulling a sled in the Artic. Loved all the attention.

Did not take me long at all to embrace my hosts Ann and Scott as they were salt of the earth people who went out of their way to make me feel at home.

Next day it was off to a rally whereas over 800 fellow detectorists were going to do the dew. Met folks from everywhere including a pair of Poles who were trying to drink the UK dry. Put in my 9 hours detecting finding one large copper, 2 pound modern coin and God knows what else. next day the same thing; 9 hours and a few coppers. Scott joined me the on this day pulling out the same finds.

One day melted into the next with the same regiment followed each day. Cup of tea, pack, drive dig, return home eat and watch the tube. Really bonded during these days with the hosts and their brood taking Bugsy out for walks to the local store for treats for his kind and pints of rum for my kind.

This was broken up with one day shopping in a town which name escapes this bouy and another whereas Scott took me to meet Phil (Allover) from one of the forums. Nice chap who took me to a flint mine and some interesting fields. Again finds where elusive. Took him out to lunch which was super. Had lamb and a few pints...then a few pints more. Back to the field where a few buttons were scoffed.

52 hours detecting yielded no Roman nor hammies but this bouy was in heaven stumbling through the ploughed fields. No finds of note.

The end came all too quickly. My hosts were just unbelievably nice, weather was okay with some food that I had been craving for. A huge thanks to Ann and Scott for putting up with me for the fortnight.

Well what can I say. It was a pleasure to host Leslie ,a first for us. We only moved house a few weeks prior to Leslies arrival so as you can imaging, mayhem. My only regret was the farmer leaving the fields in stubble which he started to plough the last few days of Leslie's vacation. Hard going but Leslie soildered on never once complaining.
Alas his trip ended too soon with no major finds but all I can say ,he is welcome to stay again next year. [81/]

Great stuff Leslie!!!

Glad you had a good visit and nice hosts to boot [18/]

Shame you didn’t find anything of note but I find the anticipation beforehand makes up for it :);/ :);/ :);/
