Prayer Token ?

Post by Detectorbod »

Hi ,

Found this Saturday , love this token so interesting , my question is it a prayer token (guessing so) and age ? it has the Lords Prayer on it - complete [20/]
Guessing its Victorian. Really impressed with it. Any body confirm exactly what it is please.
Thanks

Lovely prayer token! Seen similar ones which date from late 1800s to mid 1900s.

I always thought they dated to World War One, I read somewhere they were issued to soldiers.

Yes there's a fair few kicking about which have George V on one side and a prayer on the other. So that's probably a good date for this.

That also makes sense i have found the odd cap badge and lapel/ collar numbers , i rather suspect someone had a cottage on there or farm workers after WW1

For what it's worth you can tell if it's Catholic or Protestant version of the Lord's Prayer includes the doxology, 'For thine is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory now and forever,'
