Request help to ID lead find

Post by Tronic »

Hello everyone, and thank you for reading this.
I wondered if any of you had an idea what this lead item, which weighs 26g is.
It was found in an open, grass, farm field at a depth of 100mm, using a Minelab Xterra Pro.
It looks like the damage on it was caused by a plough, which i believe has altered its original shape.
There are no Battlefields marked anywhere near the area it was found, but there are Roman sites within the district.
Thanks in advance for your help, Tronic.

Shapeless lead blob could be anything. One for the scrap bucket I'm afraid. You'll find many bits like that on your travels.

Hi folks, thanks for your replies, this is really apprieciated. I didnt hold out much hope of it being "something", but still cant work out where lumps of processed lead would come from in the middle of a field.
Cheers, Tronic.

Hi Tronic
There are lots of posts on here regarding why some fields have lead scattered around.
It seems in days gone by, lead was used for all sorts of things including practical uses such as securing stuff (and associated off-cuts), filling holes, weights, tokens etc as well as more decorative uses such as pendants, pilgrim-related items etc etc
I think it's often a positive sign that your field may be productive if there are random bits of lead on it - certainly my most productive fields produce loads of the stuff.
Cheers, Ruth

Yes you start worrying when like on my last outing youre standing in a massive field having to check every once in a while to see of your machine is even switched on.

It's seldom youll find any joy from lead finds. But I agree with Ruth, they are a good indication of past activity
