Old Iceni hoard British Museum

Post by Dave Lowe »

While on a visit to the British Museum to look at the Chew Valley Hoard last December, came across this Iceni hoard in another gallery, I was amazed at the number and condition, but mostly how small the coins were.
Nearby a gentleman from the museum was interacting with visitors showing them certain items on his desk, I showed him my vespasian denarius I carry in my wallet, he then got out a tray from a drawer and let me hold about 10 different denarius, followed by a small bronze age socketed axe !!! as you can guess I went home rather happy [88/]

I treasure my own Iceni Norfolk Wolf stater [75/] I have seen other images of that hoard, I think from Wickham Market? Its such a fantastic iconic collection. I also have a few smaller silver units, but the stater is special and I had the great pleasure to visit Liz Cottam and Chris Rudd at Celtic Coins who explained what all the markings signified, how they were made and also showed me lots of fakes. No Specsavers then of course and amazed that they were able to work such VERY tiny detail, two wonderful people, Liam :;@
