Having read the initial post again I can't see an issue here.
My opinion (FWIW) is it seems like the museum offer was going to pay out at 50/50 but this then fell through, so the farmer has merely asked "what we are going to do with them" which is a fair question - and the fair answer is just go halves.
All other details to me are a distraction.
Where do i stand ?

Agree with you , It would be a dangerous tactic ... the 28 day so called rule .. could end up with the club being thrown off the land, and potentially the finder taken to court. a 50/50 split is the way to go, and if things get ugly, give the find to the farmer. Life is too short.mrmallard wrote: Sat Mar 08, 2025 9:22 am How this is handled aside, I can’t find anywhere that says if the landowner doesn’t object within 28 days to the find being returned to the finder that it transfers ownership.
I would be surprised if that is the case or that the coroner has the power to do that.
Thoughts?

50/50 All the way
i would get a valuation and offer the farmer, half the coins or half the value, or all the coins and give you half the value, his choice. go and meet with him face to face asap. keep it friendly,

Firstly thank you all for your replies, they have helped clear up some confusion at our end and the club are making adjustments to the contract as we speak. I went to see the farmer yesterday and after having a look at the coins he thanked me then handed them back, Asked him what was to happen with them? keep them, you found them he said. No mention of money and gave us more land for future rallies. After reading through your replies i will be visiting the farmer again this weekend and paying him his share of the value. Thank you all once again for your advice.

A lot of farmers are interesting, I like them, they don’t tend to fret over little things and I find them refreshingly honest people.
The other week I was on a brand new permission and found a coin that was really quite good. I went back to the farmhouse feeling somewhat elated and showed the farmer this little silver gem that had been hanging around for about 800 years.
I held it out saying “are you interested in history?”
“NO” he said.
