Did I find something interesting, or did I find a bit of a pipe!?

Finding and identifying old pottery and fragments while out metal detecting.

Did I find something interesting, or did I find a bit of a pipe!?

Post by gjclayton »

Hello all.

I found these two items on the beach on the Isle of Sheppey.
I also found some black burnished ware nearby(ish).

The larger piece looks like a wide bottom pot to me and appears to have some glaze remaining on the outer surface. I can't figure out how the base would have attached, so it might just be a pipe!!

The second is a strange white ceramic curved piece. Is this just the handle to a mug or something different!? It feels like it is too light to be a handle and it isn't glazed (I don't think)

Any advice or ideas gratefully received!!

The large piece looks like part of a cam lock coupling.

Something like this, used widely on bulk containers.
Not sure on the ring

Thanks for this.

The larger piece is definitely ceramic. Do they make camlock couplings in ceramic?

No they don’t make in ceramic, I thought it looked metallic with a folded rim.
Back the truck up then, 😁

Thanks for the clarification. This was kind of my thought process too. The amount of things I saw that I thought were medieval ceramic X and then flipped them over and they were 20th century water pipes!

Does the curved item have holes in the ends, or signs of having broken off something?

My reason for the suggestion is that I brought an ebony walking stick with an ivory handle back from Kenya, visiting friend took it from the stick stand and gave it a twirl as in Charlie Chaplin style and it fell flat to the floor! [27/]
The result was a broken handle very much looking like the item you depicted above.
Cheers Eric

It Def looks like it broke off something. The trajectory of the curve makes me think it was fully round at some point. It could have been a cup handle, but it just doesn't feel right for that.

I followed the trajectory/route of the piece and it could have made a circle/ring.
