I was waiting for these pics to be put up!! I just can't imagine what the finder felt like :D
Its better out of the ground and in your hand for the history or monetary value rather than left in the ground to rot doing nothing for anyone.

Yes, I was there. I estimate it was about 5,000+ coins. The FLO who dug it all out identified two coins as being Cnut and AEthelred (the unready). They were all in excellent condition by the looks of things- all shiny and new looking and they jingled as they were tipped into the 25 or so bags needed to contain them all. Then the whole lot filled a Sainsbury carrier bag. The FLO took them all away in a large box. I think it's the largest hoard of saxon coins ever found in this country.

They will be declared treasure and locked away in some vault before going on display in one of the larger museums. Hopefully this will mean that the prices paid for individual Cnut pennies should stay as they are now. If it is true that there are up to 7000 coins then the value has to be a least £1 million plus so it will interesting to see what is the final valuation. I do hope the finder is one of our members and gets around to posting his account of events and more pictures. :)
I suspect these will be disclaimed due to the funding required to purchase ,although if there are unknown or rare ones they will be acquired seperately.

A stunning find and my only advice would have been to double bag because i once had a bag split when i had a 4 pint milk in a sainsbury's bag,cd ::g

Be interesting to know what settings he was using and what the VDI reading was? People seem to have very different interpretations of what qualifies as an "iffy signal".

I think it may have been the wide size of the signal that made him suspect it was just iron initially. I heard him say that he poked the 9" coil down the hole and then the Deus confirmed that it was a positive signal. I also heard him say that he never gives up on a signal.
