Metal Detecting

Well I hope I dont get blown up by you reburying that grenade as I've been along slapton a few times. Why did you re-bury it and not contact the police?

Anyways can anyone tell me definitively what this stuff is/was for please?



I've collected so many I could probably melt them down and build a shed out of it by now. It's very light so I'm assuming its aluminium shrapnel from incendiary bombs dumped into the sea and washed up on shore? Maybe with phosphorus? Unfortunately it gives a good signal on the euroace and covers most Devon beaches, and it shares the same discrim notch as some precious metals, tempting me to dig every time,

I took a photo of the tank many years ago ,I was an active ham radio operator at one time and had been speaking with an American who had been posted to the UK and was at slapton sands when they were attacked by the German E boats .I told him about the tank memorial he said he had always wanted to return to Slapton to pay his respect to the pals he lost but was now too old to travel so I sent him the photo.

Young and dumb is my only excuse for re-burying anything potentially hazardous. 30 years ago, the item we dug could just have easily have been a tractor part, but with healthy imaginations and knowing the history of the area, was enough for us not to go whacking it with a spade to get the encrustation off to find out and we re-buried it.
This was NOT on public access land but on private land between Slapton and Blackpool sands.

programme on channel 5 tonight at 8pm, all about slapton sands should be interesting

Studland beach was used and the heath behind it but this is trust so you cant do the heath but the shoreline is ok that is were they found the floating tank they used for d day also there are pill boxes by the shoreline

Ken Small used to be found almost every day down at Slapton standing next to that DD Sherman, signing books and selling them. He died a few years ago now.

I recived the book a few days ago, the legend lives on as i am sure he would have wanted!
