Hiya
Just tried the 'Harpic method' and was very very disappointed as I followed the instructions to the letter and was amazed at the before and after piccies of the cartwheel penny that was posted. What did I do wrong - i tried it on a couple of pennies Georges 3 and 5. I have now drowned them in a pot of cola to see what happens now.
Regards
Rockape

It doesn't work for everything, some items that are very pitted will look better with the grime on, a trick to restore something that appears to loose detail is go over it with a graphite pencil and rub the coin to work it in just after applying some renaissance wax, it can bring the detail back.
But to add if the coin is extreamely worn, no cleaning will restore it.
I have had a few items that got worse, but many looked better, but I wouldn't recommend it on anything of value, as I don't know the long term effects of the treatment

You can use a pencil rubber on coins to with some good results. White vinegar is good too but again be careful just like harpic plus leave it too long and you get a blank disc.
