Thanks again for the info, I'll go ahead and get one. I'm going to be one of the classic 'all the gear and no idea' blokes for a while
Cheers
Jon

Personally I think it's risky going in the deep end with the type of financial investment and personal commitment the Deus demands. Switch on and go is not quite the story. Even with the default programmes, the machine is talking to you and you are going to have to interpret what it's telling you. It's not straightforward and easy. And for all the advice to stick with the factory programmes for a while, I guarantee it won't be long before you are making a few tweaks, or putting in someone's "magic formula", and that will open up a whole new level of learning, sometimes delight, more often frustration. If you are hooked by the hobby, then you persevere and in time you will get rewards. But how do you know you will be hooked if you've never tried it? Good luck, I hope it turns out well. I think you've made a bold decision.

I wouldn't worry too much .. The second hand market for the deus is pretty strong if you decide you want to sell it
Which you won't lol

All three members of The PAST team use the Déus (and the Garret Pro-Pointer) and it doesn't appear to have done us any harm
At the end of the day, even if you had a "million" pound machine, you've got to walk over it
I would choose a small field and line it out accurately searching one way, then doing it again at 90 degree's until there isn't a signal left. That way you will have an idea of all the sounds from everything, that is iron through to copper.
Going over it a third time will give you the chance to dig any scratchy iffy signals that you have missed or ignored.
Doing this will give you a high level of confidence when you venture out onto new land.
Check out some of the finds that The PAST have recovered:

Enjoy

i started with an Ace 250 for a year, enjoyed the hobby, then went for the Full Deus set up with 11 inch coil. Started on basic programs, dug up everything for a while, whilst getting used to the tones. I now love the Deus, using Gary's Hot Program, tweaking bits for conditions etc. Read the manual a few times, but don't be put off by the expert stuff on there. You will know when to start using different programs or how to tweak things when you get used to it more. It certainly is a switch on and go machine if you want it to be. I too, watched loads of You Tube videos by different people to learn different aspects of the machine. Go for it, we aren't here long, enjoy yourself i say ! Best of luck matey

Great advice, wish someone had told me that when starting out with a new machine!

GeoJon wrote:Hi all
I'm looking to buy my first metal detector. I'm a complete novice of course and don't have any permissions or club membership yet (although I've asked Surrey Searchers if I can join them). I was hoping to detect on farmland in the Surrey area.
I really like the look of the XP Deus just based on reviews and youtube vids. Obviously I don't really know what I'm looking at, but it gets good reviews. Do you think it will be too advanced for me?
I've got the budget but I read somewhere that novices buying advanced detectors is a big reason for them giving up on the hobby. Would that be the case?
Thanks for any advice.
Jon
I'm about to purchase a Deus so have been reading through some old posts. Had a good chortle reading the opening post followed by the 80 odd hammies in the signature!!!
I guess you got the hang of it.

Hello 'GeoJon'

Now look what you've started!!!
It's all been said in the many posted replies above

Simply become familiar with the detector and it's basic programmes first, readily accept that there will be some disappointing days mixed in with the good and memorable ones and along the way, the important tip to remember is....enjoy it
All the best and Good Luck. Regards ss47.
