That's 3 hammered coins this year already. To put this in perspective I only got 2 all last year!

My first thought was it was part of a Roman brooch but Ironman (detecting buddy extraordinaire) stole my thunder and said it's a piece of furniture mount. I will post a picture of the reverse tomorrow if it helps.

Hi Trev.. I dont think that its a furniture mount as the decoration seems to be 360deg on the shaft bit rl; rl; rl; I would go with a possible strapmount, possibly medieval, but I'm not an expert. Thank-you for posting the additional pic.

Hair of the Dog
Hello and welcome to another installment of Deus Digging in Derbyshire. A big thank you to everyone for watching my You Tube videos. I made a short (6 min video of this hunt too). The folks who subscribed now have a special place in my heart and are offical detecting buddies

I went out on Saturday and celebrated my, soon to arrive, birthday. Another decade has arrived and I still haven't had my gold coin dream come true. I really believe that this is the year though. Some of the pubs we went in Nottingham date back to the crusades. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem pub is actually built in a cave and dates back to 1189AD and is meant to house some ghosts too! I believe I may have become host to a few spirits because when I awoke I felt like some evil presence had destroyed part of my brain. Luckily after drinking lots of water and eating unhealthily I started coming around. I decided I would brave the cold and rain and get out detecting. I arrived at the pub and fought the urge to have a hair of the dog and set up ready to detect.

Going Nowhere Fast
I spent 2 hours on 1 row today. It seems like every inch has metal objects strewn around. It was very slow going but while the coins kept coming I was content enough. I know that they're modern but I still like digging up coins it gives me a buzz. Plus I'm saving them in a tub and I'm going to take them to the supermarket and cash them in. I resisted the urge to change my settings and stuck with GMP and the setting did me proud. The Deus is so good at finding coins I even found a plastic one Take a look beneath at what else I found.

For me it took also a decade - a decade of detecting, to stumble over my first gold coin last year.
Since this has been found with a Deus too, I think I can inject it to the thread to keep up your motivation continuing the series for the next years.

There's a Gold Ring That's Been Lost in that Field...

Today I was giving Ironman a day off driving for good behaviour in public. It was also my turn to pay for our monthly slap up breakfast. I tried to pass him the bill but despite his advanced years he'd managed to remember. Well and truly fed and ready for action we hit the road. The weather was fair and even the sun threatened to come out. Ironman had one of his 'good feelings' I wasn't sure what would turn up by I was dead keen on finding out. We'd known for a while that the land owner's wife had lost a gold ring on one of these old farmland fields and it's not something we'd forgotten. We'd be happy whoever found it. The feeling of being able to hand something like that back would be awesome. I had not been detecting long when I hit a big signal that sounded exactly like a ring pull ( a high, double bleeping, dig me out baby signal ). I didn't get really excited until I saw the glint of gold in the sunshine then I just started shouting at Ironman over the fields " YESSSS!" "YESSSS!!!" I could see a stamp inside it. I thought I'd made an incredible find.

All That Glitters...
The dawning realisation came upon me that the gold had tiny green patches. Plus those areas felt rough. I couldn't believe it! How could a fake gold ring be here right in the middle of the field? Arghhhhhh! Alas, the cruel gods doth taunt me like some plaything. To be taken to the heights of joy only to be crushed by a worthless bauble. Yet again, the glory of gold has been denied but I will not waver in my mission. The hammered gold coin is out there. I only need the luck, patience and dedication to my craft to find it. I shall press on dear friends. I must.

The Field that Keeps Giving: That's All You Can Ask For.
Well, I still felt excited to carry on. False hope is better than none at all! I found a beauty of a Tudor buckle with back plate remaining. I found plenty of buttons and even an old George III farthing 1806. I even managed to dig out an entire farmers tractor from the field. See the pics below Iron x16, modern x7, lead x18 copper alloys x3

You made me laugh. The life of a detectorist is paved with so many moments of true joy, excitement, best day ever finds - that are then so cruelly snatched from our grasp. That ring was especially cruel. How often do you see a wedding ring that is plated? And they can't even just say plated, they call it 'rolled' to sound like it's better. You were cheated and I feel aggrieved for you

BTW for any of you going to correct me on the technical difference just stop . I doubt any of us really care (I certainly don't) because in reality it is some non precious metal pretending to be far more valuable. It is a lying, cheating ring and is not worth wasting more time on.

Anyway glad you've gone away from that pub garden and back to proper detecting in a field. You didn't get another hamerred this week but I could see the anticipation was there in your every signal.

Hi Oxgirl, it's good to know I'm not the only one who's had those moments. I'm sure we all have. It's part of the game.

I occasionally get Ironman to do some filming. I guess I should mention him in the credits but I don't want him to start asking for a fee
Most of the filming I do myself.
