Hello and welcome to another edition of Deus Digger Diary. I know it's been a long time since I posted one of my hunts but I have been focusing on my Youtube channel plus I've been busy with life stuff. Anyway enough excuses. Here's how I got on.

I had a call from a friend of mine who said I could do a mate's land. So I jumped at the chance. I drove there and it was up and up. I initially passed it was so out of the way. The drive to the place was pretty hair-raising, right on a cliff edge! The guy showed me around and said "I've got all this land you're free to go anywhere..." Here's my thoughts.

Oh my days, have you ever seen primordial forest before? I'm thinking Fangon (Lord of the Rings) but I put on a polite smile and said my Thank yous. Well, I got to detecting on the very sparse bits of flat ground and straight away I got a beautiful military Yorkshire Regiment cap badge. Followed after by an old Penny in wonderful condition. The game was a foot. I detected where I could, including climbing a very steep bank, risking life and limb but to no avail. I even tried at the side of an old tennis court, where I found a cool hexagonal Booth's Distilleries bottle.

I had a great time but after 3 hours it was time to call it day. You can only fight weeds for so long!

Missed this post was only thinking the other day that you hadn't posted for ages. Hope everything is going well. Maybe wasting time writing this, when could be detecting? It's hard work but be lovely to see a summer round up, or an autumn one?

The YouTube videos are OK'ish but certainly miss the very witty MDF forum version,my personal opinion is that it makes compulsive reading with the humour but it lacks it a little on videos.

Hi Trev, You should if you have time, they really are appreciated by many. You show that it is not just the rest of us who dig crap along with the better finds.

@samuraitrev,that is terrific news,you just seem to have a natural talent for your digger diaries,very entertaining and almost all the forum followed your adventures.It was and still is one of the most visited posts on the MDF forum,that speaks volumes.....YouTube videos are 'ok' but for some reason the entertainment factor just does not follow across onto the videos.

Excellent! I miss your weekly posts. I should have asked months ago B-) Be great for anyone new to the hobby too. Your about the only person who shows the dross along with the better stuff. And I loved the weekly journey towards almost finding the precious stuff and cheered you on when you eventually struck gold.

Well folks my thought entirely I miss the diary to and I'm out digging with trev and what a buddy couldn't wish for a better partner,I also agree with the coments on the you tube videos they don't do it for me either.to be honest we have both been struggling for land for a while and what little we have done hasn't been good at all,I have a good permission at Lincoln 300 acres but it's an hour and 30 mins from us and trev doesn't do early mornings ie up at 5 am. I am going this Sunday so if you want to come trev feel free,will see you in the usual watering hole Friday night all the best ken

I would like to say that but I will just type this diary instead After being inundated with a landslide of requests to return to typing up my adventures, I couldn't possibly deny the 0.0000076173% of the population of the UK (I actually worked this out ) the pleasure of reading my action packed searches. Perhaps after my death this will be compiled in a book by an optimistic maniac with money to burn and result in bankruptcy and a systematic and thorough pulping of all copies by right thinking readers. A man can only dream. You may be reading this and be thinking, quite rightly, "stop waffling this garbage and tell us what gold staters you found."

Bizarre Detecting and Mating Ritual Analogy
I would like to say I found a gold stater or perhaps any gold or silver coin for the matter. Hey, I'd even like to say I've found a coin you can see a date on. I'm sorry if you came here wanting to see a coin hoard or anything worth money. The majority of my finds are absolutely rubbish. You would be quite right to despise them, as I do, but occasionally: I get lucky. A good analogy would be going to a nightclub for weeks on end and failing every time while others swagger off with a beautiful prize. Still with me? Good. Then for some reason, you just feel right. You've got that confident glint in your eye. You tell your friends, "right, it's happening today. I'm having it." You do your usual moves with a swinging, side to side type of rhythm. The next thing you hear a coy yet suggestive whisper in your ear. Before you know it, everything goes right and you have something in your hand you never thought possible and unbelievably you're going home holding your prize in your palpitating hand.

Right, The Actual Detecting Bit: The Quiet Field
Sorry, I got carried away. I should really go for a long walk. I better get on and actually describe my day out. So, I arrived at my detecting buddy's, Ironman, who had already been for a slap up breakfast, without me I may add, and he was ready to go. After a short drive there in the Detector Mobile Mk2 we arrived not expecting much. This was my 4th trip to this location and all I'd had was a couple of silvers (a Vicky threepence and a George V sixpence). I'm sure many of you guys wouldn't have gone back but we haven't got much land at the moment so it's a case of detecting where you can. I buried a coin at about 12" to try and gauge which setting was the best in this particular field. I knew it was quiet so I thought maximum depth would be the best. Unsurprisingly, DEEP was the best setting so I set off,as always, with great expectations. The finds started to come. Some of them at great depths such as the George III Penny and a button. This gave me hope that more would follow. Alas, it wasn't to be. A few bits and bobs turned up but it wasn't my day. You can have the best will and detector in the world but as the saying goes, "If it's not there, it's not there." With hopeful eyes we peered into the greener pastures of the next field.

Hopes, Bonfires and Silver
We decided to half this field between us. I set off with the DEEP setting once again and at about my third dig, BLEEP, a sweet high repeater sang in my ears. Like a doomed seaman I followed this siren and gradually held it in my hand. Straight away, I knew I'd found a silver artifact. The slightly black yet unpitted smooth metal and general quality made up my mind. I think I let out a, "Yesss!" not loud enough for Ironman to hear. As we surprise each other with the finds on the next day. I carried on now thinking, "oh-ho, there could be more o' that stuff." However, loads of banging iron grunts and modern belting signals started assailing my ears. I couldn't take much of it. It sounded like all the trash of the world had been thrown into this field. I was finding misshapen pieces of melted metal everywhere. It was clear this site had been used for burning rubbish in the past by the nearby farmhouse. I realised; good depth would be an impossibility on this type of site so I decided to go for a setting that was best at separating targets. For me, this was the HOT setting. I may have been better on FAST as this has some descrimination but that's what I chose. It was tough going and I did find a couple of objects but it wasn't really worth it. It's amazing what a bit of silver can make you imagine though. The sun began to slip behind the horizon and we decided to call it a day. Here's what turned up...
