Totally agree with Liam and pete......If ya bought the deus to beat your old machine for depth only then you most probably will be dissapointed....... why on earth would you think that, don't think anyone has been bragging about it..... it will go deep though if you concentrate on the basics first.... get to know what the deus is about... no good me rambling on, you need to do it yourself and what is right for you....... use the default programs for now and get used to them, if targets are at a reasonable depth, then you will find them....... if you want deep then you should join a Geofizz group...........

Ok guys, lets keep it friendly.....
I can see both sides of the coin.....
If you dont want to read the thread then dont open it.

When you buy a top end machine you have to ask yourself if you are technicaly minded enough to learn it, i made this point in one of my threads on buying/upgrading your machines.
Not having the mindset to deal with the massive array of settings and tweaks available on these machines is probably the single most reason why people give up the hobby.

By all means ask your questions but try and accept the answers that seasoned detectorists are offering.

I have read the thread a few times and there are posts that are trying to rewrite the manual and also posts that are bucking the most basic settings from the manual.
Any top end machine has perfectly adequate preset programs to get you started, once these are mastered then you can tweak settings...
This goes for any machine and not just the Deus.

If you dont like the thread then dont open it.
If you have a Deus then get out in that field and find the goodies B-)

I had my first trip out last Sunday

Had a problem ( My fault ) I did not know I had knocked the control box off the stem and trod on it

It now looks like this

I nearly cried

I used basic 1 program and found I dug lots of iron and hot rocks / coal

Question how do you tell the difference between hot rocks and coal , The ones I dug were light weight and black ?

When getting a signal with a high number the audio sounded strange and ended up being iron

I also have a V3i and normally dont have a problem with iron or hot rocks ?

Still its early days , will be out this Sunday weather permitting , maybe try basic 2 or fast for 2 to 3 hours each to see how I get on

Lets put all this into some sort of context, example, caddyshack on this forum who I usually detect with on club digs etc has had more and better finds than i have over the past few weeks.....even on my own fields...which is a bitter pill to swallow......

............ cos he passed his coil over them and I did not..................

what does he use....................

Yes it still works and the LCD is NOT damaged

Liam, you said "Wet ground overnight will tend to make the soil more conductive to signals, so it is a good time to get out next day as you will/should find that the tones are coming through louder and clearer"

Have i understood this correct ? What your saying is with the day after a wet night of rain the conductive siganls are amplified in a way or are you saying the mineralisation in the ground is more conductive so you could be pulling in more false signals ?

Took my Euro ace out today and found pleanty of lead for the scrapman.

Hi Steven, It is generally accepted by most detectorists that the day after a bit of overnight rain can make the signals easier to hear. I have copied a little bit from one of the magazines that describes this -
Hunt when the ground is wet.
The wetter the ground, the more depth you're going to get from your detector. We all know we're more likely to get an electrical shock when we're standing in water. This is because water is a much better conductor of electricity than is air.
Similarly, your metal detector's signal can penetrate deeper into the ground when the soil is moist, and on a wet day you can find coins that are too deep to detect when the ground is dry. (Note: the ground can on rare occasions be too wet, causing false signals. If this happens, turn your sensitivity control down).
Besides better depth, there are two added bonuses of metal detecting after a good rain. The ground is much easier to dig when it is wet, and the root system of the grass is less likely to be damaged by your digging.I had not thought about the environmental effect before, makes sense I suppose and one to be kept in mind if digging on seeded soil, Liam

Never new that was an advantage thought it was the opposite. I thought with the ground being wet you get the affect like a wet beach on land but after reading that now i know. Cheers for that
