Celtic on top of a hill!

Post by fred » Thu May 17, 2018 7:01 pm

Today I went back to my permission for a few hours in the sun and to continue fiddling with the settings on the Nox. In response to the complaints that I have been finding too much I slowly made my way up to the top of the slope where we have never found very much at all. ::g

As expected the signals were fewer but still somewhat more than I had expected from previous visits and not too many .303 cartridges or shottie ends either this time. Right at the top a nice crisp signal produced a confusing little copper disc. I initially thought that it was Roman but the cupped shape suggested Celtic. Once the dust was brushed off (the ground is now really dry in places) I could see an eagle or perhaps a sphinx on one side and what looks like a boar on the other.

Due to the poor condition of the coin what looks like the boars hackles might actually be letters or possibly even the legs of an animal the other way up. I wondered about Spinks 255 as the description sounds about right but there is no illustration of it in the book. Anyway any opinions about what it really is would be very welcome. :D

I'll have worked my way down to Devon by the time that you retire so you won't have to worry about a new detector because there won't be anything left to find! :D

It's very selfless of you to try to find less, Fred. Can you please try a little harder?

Seriously though, you and the Nox seem to be a remarkably successful combination so far - and long may it continue - I'm sure we all enjoy your posts and (for the most part) politely conceal our envy :)

Great find. To be honest, I would never have anticipated a Celtic find in the south east of England, as I thought the Celts stuck to the west coast i.e. Cornwall, Wales, west coast Scotland.

However, I was wrong:
