Metal Detecting

Hi,

New member

With a very old detector - got just for a bit of beach fun and may be more if I find anything interesting on Holiday

Holiday - Amble Northumberland quite a few crown beaches within easy reach

my question is is there an etiquette about this if some one else is also on the beach

I won't have that may opportunities to go detecting but don't want to run in to problems while there

And any other advice people care to share

I would say the following...
Don't walk across your fellows direct path
Fill your holes perfectly
Make sure that you detect with headphones
Say hello and smile...
Think thats about it.

The only other point worth mentioning is to keep a respectable distance from areas where there are sunbathers/picnic 'going's on'. Oh, and be prepared to be asked questions from both children and adults alike Good Luck. Regards ss47

Yes if the beach is busy with sunbathers either find a quieter spot or go after they leave or get down early morning before it gets busy.

One beach, years ago, where we used to holiday with the kids had a bloke that used to detect around the sunbathers and families on the beach. I understand he got decked on more than one occasion by angry beach goers

Children and dogs will follow you all over the beach but that is one of the occupational hazards we have to put up with. The last beach I was on I must have spent about an hour talking to adults about everything from detecting, local history, weather and the state of the world.

As for other detectorists on the beach do not worry about it, in 30 years of detecting beaches I have never had any bad experience with other detectorists. The majority are very friendly and will stop for a chat, a few will ignore you and carry on detecting. I have learned to read which these are and leave them alone

Just get out there and have a good days detecting.

I tend to beach detect just on, or just after, sunrise. No sunbathers, or sand castle builders, then and the local ne'er do wells are tucked up abed!

Make sure that you are aware of the tide times and any areas of the beach that may offer hazards for the unwary. Quicksand, gullies were the incoming tide can get around you and cut off your retreat, and deep mud; are but a few things that could spoil one's day!

Sometimes the people you meet can be almost as interesting as metal detecting.

Depending where you are detecting you might find a few undesirable characters hanging around.

Unfortunately drugs are a problem in some of our seaside towns.

Keep Changing direction and an eye on what's going on around you and you will then avoid either lads or the sea sneaking up on you.

As for other detectorists there isn't an etiquette. Take what you are told with a pinch of salt by the way. Comments like waste of time on here or its better on X,Y or Z. May or may not be true. Or might just be a tactic to discourage you and get you to move on.


You will probably get asked what you have found at sometime or other. It normally better to way up the situation. Sometimes i would say something like nothing except ringpulls and bottle caps. Depending how aggressivly I have been asked.

You will also have to work out which beaches your allowed to detect on.

I once had a young woman with a child in tow come up and ask me if I had found a ring. Have you lost one asked I, and she instantly said yes. Was it an engagement ring? Yes!!! Upon asking her how many stones were set in it, she was momentarily struck dumb as she tried to imagine what I may have found! Nice try darling! But no, I hadn't found one and we both laughed.

All the other detectorists ive came across on beachs have been fine ,english and foriegn....Be prepared to b like the pied piper with kids not rats... I try to do beach's before or after the days fun... keep an eye on the tide.... take a phone with u ...keep an eye on cliff s if detecting subsidance / erosion.... a carrier bag for the foil/ cans ull get & lolly wrappers....Be polite.....on busier beach's give people there space.....FILL YOUR HOLES IN 100% & TAKE IRON / TENT PEGS ETC AWAY WITH YOU......abandoned seal s stay clear of tell lifeguards / rspca / seal rescue out our way they are quite pro active...

Beaches are in Northumberland so I doubt will be hot with sun bathing people - but good point

My detector is a very old Coinmaster 2/DB series 2

Any one have any recollections - tips

Ow and I must say how impressed with Whites I am

I emailed them to see if the head bolts were still available for a 30 yr old detector as mine missing a bit

( I get now that all head bolts are probably of common type)

they said they would put a set in the post - no charge

good customer service for a second hand detector I was very impressed - and said so to them

As a beginner down at Penarth, there was one person who insistted on laying their bits and bobs low-cut... lets just say that i did the honorable thing by giving a wide berth... ... its a two way thing ...... so to speak. That said I only swing one way!!!! and thats always towards the lowest water mark
