What is This Stuff!?

Post by detectorman5050 » Fri Jul 13, 2018 10:46 pm

Apologies for not following the 'Hammy Code' on this one - hopefully you can make an exception for this item, which I plan to 'file in the bin' very shortly.

I just want to know what this is, so hopefully in future I can avoid it.

I was using the Equinox today. The target ID's were much flakier than usual, and I reckon this was due to the totally parched earth. Target ID's with the Equinox on land are normally very good.

Anyway, this 'blob' was giving a tone similar to a higher conductor like copper. The ID's were jumping all over the place. I didn't detect any Iron tones. It looks like a stone, but isn't.

What is it, and how do avoid digging things like this up (there were more)?

Thanks.

That looks like iron slag, or is it iron smelt ? Never know the difference. Any way it’s not the sort of thing you want to ignore.
It’s telling you a story and that story is of someone producing iron, maybe in a small way. Back before blast furnaces were thought of. Furnace was Called a Bloomery.
The different signals are probably because it’s more pure than more modern iron. Have you checked to see if it’s magnetic ?

Thanks, it is magnetic. Why would I not want to ignore it? It seems a bit of a nuisance, and relatively common in some of the slightly more remote fields I go to.

In that case it’s probably slag. Still indicates iron making in the distant past.
That means a stable population, of sorts, near-by. Iron Age finds are few and far between because of corrosion.
I had a field like that ages ago and I was advised to dig everything, just in case. Up to you but just think what you might miss by ignoring it x;

p.s. I decided I was keen but not that keen. Never dug so much tat before or since :D

p.p.s. Bloomery iron doesn’t corrode like more modern iron because it’s more pure.

I have a small ingot. I dug it because it did’nt sound like iron. It’s not corroded and it’s not magnetic well nearly not, very weak.
Always amazed me that it didn’t create more interest when it was found. To me it was, and is, much more interesting than a coin.

(Might not say that if I find a gold noble) x; :D

Don’t know what target i d you got so cant say reject it. I’ve seen someone’s settings with reject up as high as -14. Can’t say I disagree with that. I haven’t found anything of interest under 16 but that’s not unusual for me.

I would be tempted to beat the hell out of a few of them with a mash hammer to see whether there is anything inside to explain the signals. I often find that iron objects like this have holes in them, which will fool most detectors. :D

@Fred, I might try that sometime. I've found bigger and smaller chunks, and they have all fooled the detector. Quite a high tone, bouncing about from mid to high on the ID.

@DD, I am not sure it is Pyrite. Would it not have the flecks of 'fools gold' in it?

Thanks for all the suggestions.
