Saxon Penny fragment?

Post by Giz » Sun Aug 12, 2018 8:26 pm

Out today on a N.H.R.G. club dig, conditions were near perfect. The ground was easy to dig after welcome rain, light cloud, warm, slight breeze, kept dry despite a weather forecast of rain. Finds wise a slow start for the group that is, at around lunch time a cracking bronze age axe made a welcome appearance, along with a nice hammered long cross penny and a variety of coins from around George 1 onwards.
Then in the afternoon ( correct me if I'm wrong) what looked like a spear head and a late surge of hammereds surfaced, nice to see the farmer and local people take an avid interest.

My best find was the hammered fragment which does not have the markings of either long or short cross coinage. I'm hoping it maybe Saxon, I realise their is little detail to give an accurate ID. ::g

Looks like another great NHRG Club Dig! ::g Nice find G, but could you sort out the scale which would then make it a perfect ID topic! :)) The coin needs to be clearly pictured alongside a readable scale and not at an angle as otherwise the sizing does not work? Lovely find as usual, Liam :;@
