Second time out on First Permission and First Roman!!

Post by Lampie13 » Thu Oct 11, 2018 8:32 pm

Went out for 2 hours on my permission today. Only my second time out and got some nice finds.

First pre decimal coin with a George V penny dated 1921

Followed shortly after by a British Diocletian antoninianus bronze, struck in London between 289 and 293. In what I assume to be reasonable condition (first roman so don't know what is good), although it was struck poorly (off centre). Good solid black patina.

Also had several Musket balls and some other random bits.

Using my Equinox 800 in field 1 factory settings. Roman came through as a strong 18 about 6 inch deep.

Pictures to follow

Buying some Distilled water to try cleaning the Roman up a bit... Hopefully I can get some better definition on the face.

But it may be MLXXI at the bottom and on closer inspection it may be PAX AVG or similar..
But thanks for the ID.. as mentioned im pretty new to this and was giving it my best guess.

AVGGG ending coins are nice to find Lampie, they refer to Carausius's claim to be a legitimate ruler along with Diocletian and Maximian ::g

Great finds, well done. Please be very carefully with it. It is a fairly uncommon coin and may even have some value, but not if you muller it in your search for detail! :D

Well said.
Coin collectors, and FLOs!, like coins in as near found condition as possible (eg only gentle clean with toothbrush to remove soil).
Its very easy to devalue and / or damage a coin (or any other find for that matter) by trying to clean it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have read into it quite a bit and only had intentions of very gently brushing it and a short (relatively) soak in distilled water or olive oil to help with removing the worst of the grime.
Taking it to the farmer this weekend with my other finds too :)
